Fire Protection of Steel Structures

Inspiration

History and sagas tell us that cultural goods created by humans have been all-to-often maliciously destroyed or misused by those of their brethren that dedicated themselves to such detrimental actions. One remarkable example was the arson to the ancient temple of Artemis in Ephesus, apparently in 356 B.C. by Herostratos who sought to reach fame by such a nefarious act.

Similar tendencies did not seem to alleviate over millennia. The twentieth century and the first year of the twenty first one seem to demonstrate a rising competition between the developments of sciences and technology paired with apparent inability to live in peace with biological surroundings. The infamous date 9/11 will remain associated in the history with an extraordinary shocking event, even if it not has been the most disastrous one of modern times.

Leslie E. Robertson, his collaborators and the promoters of the twin WTC towers in the New York City have created not only the requested office space but also an important symbol. It should and did rise the spirit of New Yorkers at a time when

it was low for several reasons. Their oeuvre has been completed within a tight time schedule and financial budget. The quality of this oeuvre was certainly not far from optimum within these restrictions and the fact that nobody could or has expected the kind of attack that eventually occurred. It did because the attackers sought to maximize the harm by targeting a city's symbol.

A broad discussion started after the catastrophe. Robertson himself recommended to confront the root causes of hatred among mankind and concluded that "there is no end to the number of ways that man can do harm to man". Edward Gibbon wrote essentially the same in his history of the decline and fall of the Roman Empire.

Most participants of debates called for additional research while stressing that any future building codes must duly consider their effect on the cost.

The author of these lines attempts to do just that by a contribution to an improved balance between safety an economy.
