Silberring Engineering Ltd.

About Us

Ludwig Silberring, D. Sc. founded his own firm in Zurich in 1975. Eventually it has been transformed in 1982 into a shareholders company, but the founder resumed its full control in 1987.

Ingenieurbüro Dr. Ludwig Silberring AG is registered in the commercial register of the Canton Zurich along with its respective French and English translations, namely Bureau d'Ingénieurs Dr Ludwig Silberring SA and Silberring Engineering Ltd. The Company is fully independent.

Already before 1975 the founder collected ample experience, especially in the area of energy and in selected areas of chemical technology. In particular, he provided significant contributions to the design, engineering and testing of thermal power plants as well as power and industrial boilers and heat exchangers up to the highest parameters and capacities. Also in this period he was in charge of design of district heating plant and the associated boilers with their auxiliary equipment. Later on he was in charge of development of special boilers and heat exchanges for large ammonia production plants. Eventually, he dealt with the development and design of new processes for the heavy water production and with testing of key elements of the associated equipment.

The independent activity since 1975 continued over the same, albeit significantly extended areas. A number of studies and engineering contracts have been won among them for UNIDO, for other public authorities and for large industrial companies.

An interesting combined power and district-heating plant has been completed in 1987 for the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne. The Swiss Federal Building Office has awarded the associated contract. It encompassed the design and engineering of the whole plant, the particular design of the mechanical and electrical elements, the direction of the architectural and civil engineering part as well as of the construction and commissioning of the whole plant.

The above plant operates successfully since 1987. About 2/3 of the delivered heat originates from the lake of Geneva; the temperature necessary for the heating is achieved by two large heat pumps. The peak and annual average of the coefficients of performance of the latter are respectively 5.98 and 4.87. Two gas turbines deliver the peak heating power together with the peak electric power.

A large part of time has been invested into the research and development of new formulations for properties of gases and their condensed phases. The results are now available as a computer program system called QUANT

Ludwig Silberring has published dozens of scientific and technical papers. He is holding a number of patents.
