Day 4 - Part 9

Making the video...

8.25 am

Sky is as blue as the sea when they meet at the horizon. Man comes into the picture.

TITO: Hey there, I'm Tito Bo, assistant director. It's half past eight already and we're late from our schedule. Nothing new, of course on productions like these but it gets everyone of us furious because it means nothing's gonna go our way.

Men are setting lights into the water.

LIGHTNING MANAGER: It's freezing cold, this water! I don't know how they're gonna manage with this. Try it out.

We see when someone dips his toes into the water and quickly takes few steps back.

SOMEONE: Yeah, he's right. Freezing.

Nick is sitting in a chair having his make-up done and talking to another crew.

NICK: I had pretty restless night. I guess there's ghosts in that house. Have you captured any on your tape? Not yet? Well, I hope you will. Oh see, there's our friends from MTV. You want a word from me as well at this hour? Sorry, no can do. They wont even bring me decent coffee.

Woman bringing the coffee mug mumbles something in Portuguese, Nick just shrugs and smiles at the camera.

NICK: I like things this way, they do it my way, right? Hey, there comes our director!

Camera turns rapidly and zooms in at Carlos and Cara walking to the set. She's once again wrapped in a huge white robe. She seems absent, unfocused, exhausted. Carlos keeps explaining her all the way even if it seems obvious he's not getting his words trough.
Be-Bob comes from the side and escorts Cara to his own place. Carlos comes to Nick.

CARLOS: So my golden boy, are you ready?

He glances at the camera, showing that he doesn't appreciate those there, but at the same time knowing that sending them away from a such simple set would be death notice.

NICK: I'm ready. I will never be readier. So where's my white horse?

-How's she? Cara asked as soon as Carlos was out of the way.
-Sleeping, last time I checked. Don't worry. There will be someone keeping eye on her. All the time.
Cara looked up to this big guy standing next to her and saw seeds of tiredness on his face but didn't say anything.
-Any idea what I'll have to do next? she asked instead, now confirming the fact that she hadn't listened Carlos at all. Nick gazed in their way, looking concerned. They hadn't changed a word in the morning, any of them. While JK had the unpleasant duty to wake Nick up, Be-Bob was just coming back from the hospital carrying sleeping Ophelia in his arms. That's why Be-Bob nodded at Cara and paced over Nick's chair.
-Everything OK? Nick asked looking at the cameras around.
-Nothing for you to worry, Be-Bob answered. You just take care of your work, all right?
-Is she gone? Nick whispered. Be-Bob didn't know what to say and was silently grateful as Carlos made his move and escorted big white horse in. Everyone cheered, including Nick. Be-Bob then again though he heard tiny scream behind him and as he turned to see he faced Cara with pale face smiling slightly. It was impossible to say if her skin was now lighter than before, if her veins were more visible. And after all, there was pretty much nothing he could do anymore.

Nick raced to pet the horse as Carlos tried to settle the crew down. Samuel came to Be-Bob.
-I think you should go to bed, he commanded. You'll be needed later during the day.
Of course Samuel knew. He was the one Be-Bob called once they got to the hospital. Even Boys thought that he didn't know half of the things they've done. But they were wrong. Samuel was told if they even considered doing something stupid. It was so valuable to his job, he wouldn't have managed this far if he didn't know. Then again there was no need for Victor Myers, their real manager, to know everything. That's where Samuel guarantied that his work would still be his, even after a very bad day.
-Yeah, I guess you're right.
Be-Bob had worked for Samuel long enough to know that he didn't ask or suggest, he just told what to do.
-How's Nick dealing with it? Samuel asked just before sending Be-Bob off.
-One triumph more for great denial.
They looked at Nick explaining to the cameras everything he knew about horses. Samuel tapped Be-Bob on his back. It was his mark and with slow, draughty steps he started to approach the house even if he knew that all he could do was guard someone else's sleep instead of taking a nap himself.

Making the video

8.11 am

Carlos sits in his director's chair, shot against the blue sea.

CARLOS: First we shoot some going around in water. I know it's cold, yanks!, but it has to be done.

Nick goes to the shore and stands in the water so that sea splashes against his ankles.

NICK: Ice age. Here we come. I'm not sure what this will do to my manhood.

Nick quickly opens his robe and glances in, then pulling strings tight and letting out a loud sigh.

NICK: Still there, don't worry.

Carlos came with Cara, holding her slightly from her elbow. She seemed like she wanted to run away. Expression on Carlos' face was unpleasant when he noticed freezing wall between his two protge.
Cara looked at Nick quickly, not letting her eyes stay in his. Nick was staring somewhere over the horizon.
-OK. Are you ready for this? Take your jackets off.
Cara slowly undressed and handled the robe to assistant standing next to her. Nick let his robe to drop, right down to the water so it became soaking wet and heavy to lift.
-Take your places! Carlos ordered.

He put their legs and arms to positions, but nothing seemed natural. They were like two sacks of wet sand, shaped for a moment but in the next flushed away by waves.
-First shot, Carlos finally gave in hoping that what ever it was it would melt after few more minutes together. What could have happened since previous night when it had been almost perfect? Carlos shook his head, unable to even think so weird thoughts and concentrated to his, on his opinion, doomed work.

After five first shots they were both cold. Cara's lips were blue and trembling slightly. Nick rubbed her shoulders lightly with towel. Cara turned to smile at her gratefully.
-Don't get me wrong, Nick said low. I'm just doing my work. As well as I can.
Cara turned her head away and if he would have taken hold on her chin, as he wanted to, and turned her back to him he would have seen tiny angry tears in corners of her eyes.
But next order coming from Carlos got her just biting her lip and promising to herself that if she'd get trough that video shoot she would forget any romantic idea she ever had about Nick.
-OK, now I want to see some action! Rolling in the sand, and you know
But they weren't making it easy on her.
