Music and Song Lyrics

This kind of page is a really good idea. Unfortunately, it wasn't mine. I have to give credit to Drew for giving me the ideas both for the page and the format. The reasons for it being here, though, are all my own. I've always felt that certain songwriters rival literature's best poets in talent, emotion, and skill. Unfortunately, many people tend to ignore the words, preferring instead something "with a good beat, that you can dance to." Here is a list of song lyrics that, for one reason or another, have struck me. Some of them (like Drew said on his page) are better with the music, so I'd suggest you go and seek them out. Some of them just sound cool. Others just have special meaning to me for one reason or another. (Also, obviously, all these lyrics are copyrighted to the bands that engendered them, and if I knew how to make one of those cool copyright symbols, I'd do so. I can't, so this statement will have to suffice.)

"Born Too Late" by the Clarks

Vincent, will you teach me how to paint?
Teresa, will I ever be a saint?
John, I really think your songs are great
I was born too late

William, will you teach me how to write?
Cassius, will you show me how to fight?
Thomas A., I think I see the light
I was born tonight

I've had a hard time leaving this town
I've been losing everything that I've found
I'm gonna search the sky
Kiss the ground
Build it up and tear it back down

I've had a hard time leaving this place
I've been counting all the lines on my face
I'm gonna curse the sky
Hit the ground
What goes up comes tumbling down

Jimmy, show me how you play that thing
Elvis, will I ever be a king?
Jerry, all the joy and life you bring
I was born to sing

Martin Luther King, show me the way
Jesus, Buddha, teach me how to pray
Christopher, I think I see the bay
I was born today

"Hi and Lo" by the Cherry Poppin' Daddies

It would be nice to hear from you
you must be better than
When you used to call me for advice
All drunk and sad at 4 AM
We both have lost our girlfriends
but our sense of humor never
In the summer we saved each other's lives
by hanging out together

Chorus:
I've been high, but mostly low
A lifelong lodger on the bitter road
But I like mine to shine like gold
The darkest hour turns brighter than a rose

The memories I still lean on
in the current haze I'm in
When we were so down, we'd toast the town
Like two black-hearted Irishmen
I don't settle things with booze, like I did for years
There's a guy that I still care about
in the stories that I hear

Chorus

We didn't get much further than a shoebox for a home
And our mattresses are gray with years
Of passing out in our street clothes
Now the hard times are behind us, so let's not be alone
And the bottom line, and this is mine
Dammit, we both got a phone

Chorus

"The Night Pat Murphy Died" by Great Big Sea

Oh the night that Paddy Murphy died
Was a night I'll never forget
Some of the boys got loaded drunk
And they ain't got sober yet
Well, as long as the bottle was passed around
Every man was feeling gay
O'Leary came with the bagpipes, some music for to play

Chorus:

That's how we showed our respect for Paddy Murphy
That's how we showed our honor and our pride
They said it was a sinning shame
And we winked at one another
And every drink in the place was full the night Pat Murphy died

As Mrs. Murphy sat in the corner, pouring out her grief
Kelly and his gang came tearing down the street
They went into an empty room and a bottle of whiskey stole
And put the bottle with the corpse to keep that whiskey cold

Chorus

At two o'clock in the morning, after emptying the jug
Doyle rose up the icebox lid to see poor Paddy's mug
It stopped the clock so Mrs. Murphy couldn't tell the time
And at a quarter after two we argued it was nine

Chorus

Well, we stopped the hearse on George Street outside (?)'s Saloon
We all went in at half past eight and staggered out at noon
We went up to the graveyard, so holy and sublime
Found out when we got there, we'd left the corpse behind

Chorus

Oh the night that Paddy Murphy died
Was a night I'll never forget
Some of the boys got loaded drunk
And they ain't got sober yet
Well, as long as the bottle was passed around
Every man was feeling gay
O'Leary came with the bagpipes, some music for to play!

Chorus

"Boston and St. John's" by Great Big Sea

Girl, don't tell me that it's morning
Can we keep the curtains drawn?
Haven't given you fair warning
But our ship, she sails at dawn

Chorus:
And it's true I must be going, but I swear it won't be long
There isn't that much ocean between Boston and St. John's
I'm a rover, and I'm bound to sail away
I'm a rover...can you love me anyway?

And if some suitor comes a-courting
Will you let him through your door?
And what if I return half broken
Will you still love me anymore?

Chorus

Close your eyes and dream
And tell me what you see
Tell me what you want
Just tell me that you'll wait for me
And oh, girl don't tell me that it's morning
Can we keep the curtains drawn?
I haven't given you fair warning
But our ship, she sails at dawn

Chorus

I'm a rover...can you love me anyway?

"Here's to the Night" by Eve 6

So denied
So I lied
Are you the now or never kind?
In a day
And a day, love
I'm gonna be gone for good again
Are you willing
To be had?
Are you cool with just tonight?
Here's a toast
To all those who hear me all too well

Chorus:
Here's to the nights we felt alive
Here's to the tears you knew you'd cry
Here's to goodbye
Tomorrow's gonna come too soon

Put your name
On the line
Along with place and time
Wanna stay
Not to go
I wanna ditch the logical
Here's a toast
To all those
Who hear me all too well

Chorus

Bridge:
All my time is froze in motion
Can't I stay an hour or two or more
Don't let me let you go

Here's a toast
To all those who know me all too well

Chorus (repeat twice)

"Blurry" by Puddle of Mudd

Everything's so blurry
And everyone's so fake
And everybody's empty
And everything is so messed up
Pre-occupied without you
I cannot live at all
My whole world surrounds you
I stumble then I crawl

You could be my someone
You could be my scene
You know that I'll protect you
From all of the obscene
I wonder what you're doing
Imagine where you are
There's oceans in between us
But that's not very far

Chorus:
Can you take it all away?
Can you take it all away?
When you shoved it in my face
This pain you gave to me
Can you take it all away?
Can you take it all away?
When you shoved it in my face

Everyone is changing
There's no-one left that's real
To make up your own ending
And let me know just how you feel
'Cause I am lost without you
I cannot live at all
My whole world surrounds you
I stumble then I crawl

You could be my someone
You could be my scene
You know that I will save you
From all of the unclean
I wonder what you're doing
I wonder where you are
There's oceans in between us
But that's not very far

Chorus

Nobody told me what you thought
Nobody told me what to say
Everyone showed you where to turn
Told you where to run away
Nobody told you where to hide
Nobody told you what to say
Everyone showed you where to turn
Showed you where to run away

Chorus

You take it all
Take it all away
This pain you gave to me
You take it all away
This pain you gave to me
Take it all away
This pain you gave
This pain you gave

"Plowed" by Sponge

Will I wake up
Is it a dream I made up?
No I guess it's reality
What will change us
Or will we mess up
Only chance to connect
With the dream

Say a prayer for me
Say a prayer for me
Say a prayer for me
I'm buried by the sound
Of a world of human wreckage
In a world of human wreckage
In a world of human wreckage
When I'm lost and I'm found
And I can't touch the ground
I'm plowed into the sound

To see wide open
With a head that's broken
Hang a life on some tragedy
Plow me under the ground that covers
The message that is the seed

Say a prayer for me...(etc)
(Chorus to end)

"The End is the Beginning is the End" by the Smashing Pumpkins

The sewers belch me up
The heavens spit me out
From ethers tragic I am born again
And now I'm with you now
Inside your world of wow
To move in desires made of deadly pretends
Till the end times begin

Chorus:
Is it bright where you are?
Have the people changed
Does it make you happy you're so strange?
And in your darkest hour
I hold secret flame
You can watch the world devoured in its pain
Strange

Climb my ribcage too
The replays run for you
Unhook my lights to peek behind the flash
For I am crystal chrome
And I am shattered dome
I am Kremlin king of angels avenged
To destroy the end

Chorus

The zeppelins rain upon us
The guns of love disastrous
A shadow lies amongst you
To defy the future cast

Chorus to end

"Tribute" by Tenacious D

This is the greatest and best song in the world... Tribute.

Long time ago me and my brother Kyle here
We was hitchhikin' down a long and lonesome road.
All of a sudden, there shined a shiny demon
In the middle...of the road.
And he said:

"Play the best song in the world, or I'll eat your soul."

Well me and Kyle, we looked at each other
And we each said, "Okay."
And we played the first thing that came to our heads
Just so happened to be
The Best Song in the World
It was The Best Song in the World.

Look into my eyes and it's easy to see
One and one make two, two and one make three,
It was destiny.
Once every hundred-thousand years or so
When the sun doth shine and the moon doth glow
And the grass doth grow...

Needless to say, the beast was stunned.
Whip-crack went his schwumpy tail
And the beast was done.
He asked us: "Be you angels?"
And we said, "Nay. We are but men."
ROCK!

This is not The Greatest Song in the World, no.
This is just a tribute.
Couldn't remember The Greatest Song in the World.
This is a tribute, oh, to The Greatest Song in the World
It was The Greatest Song in the World
It was the best song, the greatest song in the world.

And the peculiar thing is this my friends:
the song we sang on that fateful night it didn't actually sound
anything like this song.

This is just a tribute! You gotta believe me!
And I wish you were there! Just a matter of opinion.
Ah, ****! Good God, God lovin'
So surprised to find you can't stop it.
All right! All right!
