Bicycles and Environmental Conservation

Bringing awareness to environmental conservation is a huge component of our foundation. A main source of our funding is through our bicycle program, ECOLOBICIS, that has a goal of providing every child and adult with a bicycle for work, school, running, errands, and for sport. The majority of people in our community, San Andrés Itzapa had not used bicycles until the implementation of our program. Today we now sell bicycles outside of San Andrés Itzapa in Antigua, Chimaltenango, y Sacatepéquez every weekend. In the past, we have offered workshops on how to fix bicycles. Every part of our bicycles are used, for example the bicycles that cannot be sold are adapted into machines for exercise, as well as other pedal-propelled technology. Other environmental projects: Along with our ECOLOBICIS program, FIDESMA also works with our local government to implement workshops in the community on the environment. Some past examples of workshops in local elementary schools have been: the benefits of recycling or why students shouldn´t litter. We also have an entire library dedicated to environmental studies and on occasion, we participate in environmental festivals for the community. In the future, we will need more books, compact discs, pamphlets, and magazines on the environment.
