How You Can Help

Because FIDESMA is a non-profit organization, we depend heavily on our volunteers who are willing to donate their time, as well as the philanthropy of our contributors, especially other non-profit organizations, in order to service our communities.

Volunteer Opportunities

FIDESMA always appreciates volunteers, both from Guatemala, as well as international. You can volunteer for as short as one week or as long as a year. Although you will have more opportunities to engage in different types of projects the longer you make your visit. FIDESMA is located in San Andrés Itzapa, 60 km. from Guatemala City, near Antigua. Depending on the time of year, it may be possible to arrange a homestay for volunteers.

It is not necessary, but it might be beneficial for you to:

  1. have some experience with the Spanish language
  2. share skills with our community (for example, with computers, in art, farming, etc.)
  3. are a student at a college where you can earn credit towards your degree (please seek counsel from an advisor at your university before you decide to volunteer).

Testamonials from past volunteers:

I came here to FIDESMA, ready to help out and teach others what I learned back at home. But I found that they taught me more then I might have ever learned from just sitting in the classroom. It has been a rich and valuable experience, and I´m not going to ever forget it.

-Marissa A. Gutierrez, Political Science/International Relations major from the United States, Summer 2005.

Proyecto Mosaico Guatemala (PMG), a non-profit organization that specializes in placing volunteers in projects throughout Guatemala, may be able to help you with your accomodations while volunteering here in the country. Visit their webpage for more information.

Other Contributions

You can also support the following future projects (to help the rural communities of Guatemala):

  1. The commercialization of arts and crafts for exportations: we are trying to help quality businesses receive certification.
  2. The commercialization of natural medicine for exportation: such as good quality tea and shampoo.
  3. We are working on further supporting and building the leadership skills of women of rural areas, by giving them the opportunity to take different courses and providing them with educational scholarships.
  4. The production and commercialization of fruit and crops: and supporting the women who grow these products by finding a market for them.

If you would like to help us with any of these future projects, or with any the projects we are currently working on, we can provide you with our bank account information (if you would like to make a financial donation). Please contact us, if you would like futher information. Thank you.
