Agricultural Micro Credits
A picture of Isabel Salazer, a coordinator at FIDESMA, with women micro credit clients
Our program benefits women in the rural communities of Guatemala. We assist women who want to work as farmers, single mothers, and wives who want to support their families by helping their husbands with farming. As of this moment, we have more than 140 women organized in groups that receive small credits used to invest in seeds for harvesting. FIDESMA has had several success stories of rural women who have been given these micro credits. For example, women in the mountain community of Panajachím have used this money to support their cauliflower and carrot harvests, crops which have been later sold in Guatemala City for profit. These women continue to pay back their micro loans to FIDESMA. Women from the Cantón San Cristóbal region have used their micro credits to build a successful natural shampoo enterprise. In order to continue to help the women in our community invest each year in their harvests, the FIDESMA foundation needs credits with more lenient interests between 3,000-5,000 quetzales annually (US$400-670.00) per person. Guatemalan Arts and Crafts Project Here at the foundation, we sell art and craftworks that are produced by women in our micro credit program, as well as women who have taken sewing classes at the Skills and Training Center. They regularly create hand-made goods such as dolls, aprons, pillows, headbands, tablecloths, and much more.
Examples of the beautiful products that women in FIDESMA´s programs have created.
Our dolls and headbands are a great gift for any occasion!
However, we also need funds to invest in better material and equipment (industrial sewing machinary) to improve the quality of our goods and increase the speed of the overal production process. If you would like to help in this program, please contact us for more information.
