Savannah tapped her pencil restlessly on the counter as she waited impatiently for a customer to enter. The sound of a fan rotating side to side could be heard between her sighs. Looking around at the empty building, she set her chin on the counter directly in front of the fan giving some comfort to the summer humidity.  A neon sign glared in the window of the building, "1 hour photos".

Why this is definitely not what I had in mind when I majored in photography.

Savannah bitterly tossed the pencil at the wall and watched it bounce back onto the ground.

Youll never get anywhere with a Master's degree in Fine Arts young lady. It would do you best to stay here at the plantation and marry.  I guess mother was right.  How she would love to boast over my attitude.

Checking her watch, Savannah celebrated when it read seven o'clock.

Finally, I can go home.

Turning off the sign, she locked the building door and went around back to get her car.

Deciding she needed to restock her cupboards, Savannah stopped at Safeway on her way home.  She hated grocery shopping.  It was an unfit thing for ladies to do and a lovely reminder of how broke she was.

It only took her a few minutes to grab the essentials, and the few extra's that took up space in her small kitchen.  She was glad her apartment was merely a block from the store.

"Panny! Come here my precious!" Savannah called to her cat as she managed to hold open her door with two grocery sacks in her hands.

A big grey cat came from behind the couch at the sound of his name and lovingly snuggled up against Savannah's legs.

"Hello sweetheart! How's my kitty?" She smiled at the only thing that welcomed her home everyday.

Setting the sacks onto her kitchen counter, she picked up the ball of fur and hugged him against her.

"Did you miss me? I know mother missed you!" Savannah set the cat down and wandered over to her answering machine to check for messages. She hated using an answering machine, she missed having Milly give her her phone messages when she arrived home.

Clicking the new messages button, she smiled as she heard a familiar voice come over the machine.

"Savannah Rae! Why how are you holding up all the way over there in dreadful San Francisco? Im sure youre busy having a splendid time! I talked to your mother and she told me the good news of your graduation. I'm know you must be excited! That's part of the reason I called. But I need to talk to you ASAP, so you must call me as soon as you can! I have a job offer for you, and I think once you hear the details, there's no way you'll refuse me. So call me! And say hello to your lovely Panny for me!"

The answering machine beeped at the end of message.

Savannah smiled at her cousin's puzzling message. What job could she offer her that's so exciting?

Well... I guess anything's better than what I'm doing now.
