Fennessy Family History
A short summary

The Fennessy Surname

The surname Fennessy derives from the ancient Irish name Ó Fianghusa, which is likely derived from Fiangus.   Ó Fianghusa has also been written as Fiannghusa or Fionnghusa, which became anglicised to Fennessy during the seventeenth or eighteenth century.

"Fiangus was a Chief of a district of country near to Cashel of the Kings in the County Tipperary and, a quo, Ó Fiannghusa (fiann: Irish, a soldier of the ancient Irish militia; and gus: strength) anglicized O Fennessy, and FennessyFiangus, as the name implies, was so called by virtue of his warrior like status."

- John O Hart (1887) Irish Pedigrees, Dublin

The spelling seen on this site's web address - Fhiannusa - is the modern-day Gaelic spelling of the name Fennessy .

The crest shows a raised mailed or armored arm with a battle axe, indicating leadership in execution of military duty or a person fit for high deeds.  The helmet underneath indicates wise defense in battle.  The open hand below indicates faith, sincerity, and justice.  There is some debate over whether the hand was originally red.
