Vulkanisch weekend / Volcanic weekend

Vrijdag 19 januari was het Ethiopisch Epihany, een vrije dag met veel processies.  Wij besloten een weekend weg te gaan naar Ambo en omgeving.  Hoogtepunt was een bezoek aan het Wonchi kratermeer op zaterdag, een van de meest bijzondere plekjes in Ethiopie op redelijke afstand van Addis. Friday 19 January was Ethiopian Epihany, another public holiday with many processions.  We took the opportunity for a long weekend to Ambo and surroundings.  Highlight of the trip was a visit to the Wonchi crater lake on Saturday.  This is definitely one of the most special places in Ethiopia at reasonable distance from Addis.

Saman: 4 jaar/ years,  Yekuno: 2 jaar/ years

Allereerst rijden we op vrijdagmiddag even naar de Guderfalls, een half uurtje buiten Ambo.  Niet veel water in deze tijd van het jaar maar toch indrukwekkend met de gestolde lava en de bomen. First we drive to the Guder Falls, some 30 minutes outside Ambo town.  Not much water in this time of year, but still impressive with the solid magma and the trees. 19/01/07

Op zaterdag rijden we naar Wonchi, dat is nog 30 km over pistes.  Het landschap wordt steeds groener met alpine plantgroei. Saturday we go to Wonchi, some 30 km on gravel roads.  The landscape gets increasingly greener with alpine vegetation. 20/01/07

Het kratermeer, zichtbaar vanaf de rand, is adembenemend. The crater lake, visible from the edge, is breath taking. 20/01/07

We vertrekken: eerste etappe, de afdaling. Twee paarden, 1 voor Saman en 1 soms voor Eline en Yekuno.  Elk paard heeft zijn eigenaar/begeleider en links loopt ginds Negussie.  Fred wandelt, en Eline soms ook, als Yekuno het schudden op het paard zat is. We leave for the first section, the descent.  Two horses, 1 for Saman and 1 sometimes for Eline and Yekuno.  Each horse has its own owner/guide and on the left is our guide Negussie.  Fred is walking, and sometimes Eline too, when Yekuno has enough of being shaken on the horse. 20/01/07

De mensen wonen in dit soort kleine hutten en leven gedeeltelijk van Enset (valse banaan) - een paar planten zijn zichtbaar achter het huis. People live in this type of hut and part of their menu is Enset (false banana) of which some plants are visible behind the house.

Wauw!  We zijn beneden bij het kratermeer.  De tweede etappe is een oversteek per uitgeholde boomstamboot, met korte tussenstop op een eilandje. Wow!  We are down by the crater lake.  The second section is a crossing by hollow tree boat, with a short stop at a little island. 20/01/07

Het groen weerspiegelt in het water en we voelen ons heel speciaal. The greenery is reflected in the water and we feel very special.

Derde etappe: via smalle bergpaadjes weer landinwaarts.  Zowel Saman als Yekuno worden hier gedragen.  Negussie heeft haast want het begint zachtjes te regenen.  Gelukkig houdt het na een paar spetters weer op. Third section: inland via small mountain tracks.  Both Saman and Yekuno are carried here.  Negussie is in a hurry because it starts drizzling.  Luckily it stops after a few drops 20/01/07

Voor de vierde etappe staan nieuwe paardjes klaar voor een wandeling door een vallei met hete bronnen.  Het water van de beekjes en bronnen wordt gebruikt voor drinken, irrigatie en watermolens (fotos hieronder).  Door de vele oversteekjes hobbelt het teveel voor Yekuno en moet Fred hem weer dragen in de rugzak.  Supergenieten voor Saman met total zeker 2.5 uur te paard vandaag.  For the fourth section we get new horses for a trek through a valley with hot springs.  The water from the streams and springs is used for drinking, irrigation and water mills (below). Because of the many crossings it is too hard for Yekuno so Fred has to carry him again in the backpack.  Wonderful time for Saman with a total of over 2.5 hours on horseback today. 20/01/07

Hier kwamen we Saman's (Italiaanse) klasgenootje Philippo tegen. Here we met Saman's (Italian) friend from school Philippo.

De vijfde etappe, steil omhoog via zandpaden was te zwaar om fotos te maken.  Na een lang stuk te voet klom uiteindelijk zelfs Fred op een paard.  Saman vond alles geweldig en reed samen met Philippo voorop. The fifth section, steeply uphill via sand tracks was too tough for taking pictures.  After a long stretch by foot even Fred mounted a horse.  Saman found everything fantastic and rode in front, together with Philippo. 20/01/07

De volgende dag, op de terugweg naar Addis, zien we weer het gebruikelijke gedegradeerde landschap met hevige erosie-schade. The next day, on our way back to Addis, we see the usual degraded landscape with big erosion damage. 21/01/07
