| Cecil Sharp: 100 Years Since His First Song Harvest |
| The year 2003 marks the one hundreth anniversary of the collection of Cecil Sharp's first folk song, "The Seeds of Love." For more information, and links, go to the official site of the Traditional Song Forum. Here are just a few of the many beautiful and haunting folk songs collected by Cecil Sharp. We owe him an enormous debt. Treasure and revere his memory, and enjoy the superb heritage of traditional song that he so selflessly bequeathed to us, to our children, and to our children's chidren. These songs are taken from Cecil J. Sharp [ed.] (1916) One Hundred English Folk Songs, and the numbers in the titles refer to the numbers that the songs are given in that book. Cecil Sharp's settings (the piano accompaniments, etc.) are not included, and the guitar chords are not based upon Sharp's harmonisations. The notes are Sharp's original ones, and they display an impressive and encyclopedic knowledge of English folk song. We hope that you enjoy these songs; in our view they are among the most beautiful folk songs ever collected in England. The files are in portable document (.pdf) and MIDI format.
