Ottos plan was prepared. He had gathered all of the oil in the city. Enough to fill at least 20 barrels. Enough to soak at least an acre of land. Enough to burn at least 300 Huns. A mere nick in their forces, but a nick that would have had to have been made through blood otherwise. As soon as the scouts spotted the first Hun they would distribute the oil. When they arrived, the archers would fire burning arrows into the field, with any luck, it would catch the oil on fire. The archers would then proceed to fire arrows into the hoard, trying to knock off as many men as they could before they arrived. When they reached the village, the children would begin throwing the rocks from the roofs, the Huns would then be met by an army of men and women wielding shovels and swords. It was not an impressive army, but it was all they had, and they were going to put up a fight. No matter on how long it lasted there would be a battle. The village was prepared.
Spirius had just issued a 5 hour break to rest, prepared to wake at a moments notice. Adrian couldnt sleep, and he suspected he wasnt the only one in the city facing that problem. He knew his time was running out. It was a horrible feeling to be able to hear your own death clock ticking. They were coming, no one knew when but it was inevitable.
Adrian looked across his bed as if to make sure he was alone. Surprise. He lay alone with his thoughts for at least an hour before falling asleep. He needed it. It was going to be a long day, at least if all went as planned.
6 Hours Left
Spirius sat high on top of a building, watching and waiting. He squinted his eyes into his telescope spying into the horizon. Where are those buggers he said to himself quietly, I can see the planets with this thing why cant I see a bloody sea of Huns.
A good question, came a voice from behind him in a thickly Asian accent.
Spirius spun around, brandishing his telescope like a sword.
Calm down boy, said Adrian laughing.
What in Hades do you think youre doing? Spirius asked grimly.
Sorry, I guess its no time for jokes. I just woke up and didnt our 5 hour nap end about an hour and a half ago?
Oh dear, Spirius said rubbing his eyes. He looked down to the town water clock, and saw that it was already half past 7. Im so sorry Adrian. I was just getting so tired, I must have forgotten to check, I was just so intent on finding the Huns that I must have
Its ok Spirius. We could use the rest and so could you. Do you want me to go ring the bell.
Yes, yes that would be greatly appreciated, said Spirius nervously, but no, I cant rest. The city needs me. He shook his head and took a deep swig from his flask. This stuff should keep me awake.
Adrian smiled, You know you probably shouldnt be drinking. You might mess up on the job.
Spirius eyed Adrian strangely, Hey, arent you supposed to be running away by now?
I changed my mind, need I say more?
Spirius smiled, I dont know. I really dont know any more. Im just glad youll be here to help. Now go ring the bell please and try to round up any sleepyheads. You were a general. I only asked you because I knew you could do it.
I take offense that you say could, I might have left the job, but that doesnt mean Im useless at it. If I dont see you before they arrive, I wish you good luck, Adrian said.
Im afraid Ill need it, we all will.
Adrian hopped onto the ladder and saluted Spirius solemnly. He climbed down two rungs at a time and ran to the cathedral.
