Guin, Dominique & Luc Trouche. 1999. The Complex Process of
converting tools into mathematical instruments: The case of calculators.
International Journal of Computers for Mathematical Learning.
"moebiusstripper" (pseudonym). Tall, Dark, and Mysterious.

The article by Guin & Trouche discusses the difference between a mere tool
and a mathematical instrument, and the "instrumentation" process by which a
student begins using the calculator as an instrument. This involves developing
an understanding of the meaning of the mathematics, the abilities and limitations
of the calculator, and how to utilize this knowledge to greatest effect.
The ideas presented about instrumentation shaped my instructional
intervention mini-lessons with the intent of helping my students learn
to effectively use a calculator as a mathematical instrument.
Tall, Dark, and Mysterious is the online journal of a Canadian mathematics
teacher and textbook writer. The author discusses overuse of calculators in
certain textbooks and curricula, student dependency on calculators, common
mistakes and misconceptions held by many students, and a variety of other
mathematical and pedagogical topics. From this I learned much about the
inherent limitations of calculators and common ways in which students perceive
calculators, both of which helped me design the openers and quiz questions.
