Evidence Justifying Need for Study

Most of my students seem very reliant on graphing calculators, yet many have a very limited understanding of
how to use them efficiently and effectively. This lack of understanding has led to many students making the
exact same trivial but critical mistakes on certain recent test problems. Sometimes students will try to use
a calculator to generate a graph that would be simple to generate algebraically, and then make an error-filled
sketch because they do not recognize the inherent limitations of the graphing calculator. Others may try to
algebraically solve an equation that is in fact unsolvable, but can easily be approximated using simple calculator tools.
