Cornelia Funke's Inkweaver Trilogy, currently awaiting it's third installment, is a unique work of dark fantasy. Both Inkheart and Inkspell are captivating, if slightly melancholy. I highly recommend this trilogy, and I personally await the third installment eagerly.
