Terms
Here is a list of some helpful terms to help you understand fencing a little more.
1. Attack: an offensive move against opponent.
2. Back leg: the leg farthest from an opponent while in the on-guard position.
3. Beat: knocking your opponent's blade away offensively.
4. Blade: the striking portion of the sword.
5. Bout: a fencing encounter where touched are counted.
6. Counterattack: attacking against an attack.
7. Counterparry: a parry that covers your target area in a circle.
8. Disengage (degag�): a simple attack passing from one line to another line beneath your opponent's blade.
9. �p�e: the dueling sword of fencing. Like the foil, a point weapon. Employed with the same intent as in a real sword fight. The overriding concept of �p�e: make a touch before your opponent does.
10. Foil: the teaching weapon of fencing used in conjunction with certain rules that promote beneficial behavior on the fencing strip. A point weapon.
11. Free arm: the arm not holding the weapon.
12. Front leg: the leading leg in the on-guard position.
13. Glove: hand protection.
14. Hit: touch.
15. Jacket: fencing coat.
16. Lunge: an offensive movement designed to deliver a touch, employing a full extension of the sword arm and a forward push from the rear leg.
17. Mask: head and face protection.
18. Off-target touch: hitting an invalid portion of an opponent's body.
19. On guard: the position of readiness in fencing.
20. Parry: knocking your opponent's blade away defensively.
21. Remise: a continuation of an attack in the same line after being parried.
22. Riposte: the counterattack following a successfully executed parry.
23. Sabre: a fencing weapon descended from military swords. While the sabre is primarily a cutting weapon, the thrust may also be brought into play. Like the foil, sabre follows a set of rules that promote advantageous fencing behavior.
24. Sword arm: the arm holding the sword.
25. Thrust: extending the point of your blade toward your opponent offensively.
26. Touch (touch�): the hitting of one's opponent.
