COVERING YOUR INTERNET TRACKS

For victims of domestic violence

HOW AN ABUSER CAN DISCOVER YOUR INTERNET ACTIVITES:

E-MAIL: If an abuser has access to your e-mail account, he or she may be able to read your incoming and outgoing mail.
Even if you believe that your account is secure, make sure that you choose a password he or she will not be able to guess, and change your password often.
If an abuser sends threatening or harassing e-mail messages to you, they can be printed and saved as evidence of this abuse. Additionally, these threatening e-mail messages may constitute a federal offense. For more information on this issue, contact your local U.S. Attorneys Office.

HISTORY/INTERNET CACHE FILES: The history or cache file automatically saves and stores a record of all the websites youve visited. If an abuser knows how to read/access your computers history or cache file, he or she may be able to see information on what sites you have viewed on the Internet. You can clear your history and/or empty your cache file using settings in your browser. However, this information may not completely hide your tracks. Your browser window may have a feature that displays recently visited sites. If it does, disable that option.

The safest way to find information on the Internet is to use a computer at the local library, a friends house, or at work.
