Box-Shaped Heart
He took it from me,
snatched it away when I wasn't looking,
shut it in a small riveted metal case,
left it in the fridge overnight
and forgot about it.
I didn't even realised it was missing.
I went to the fridge for some milk,
and spotted a small metal box pulsing and vibrating
behind the butter.
As I picked it up
it felt bitter cold.
I peered inside at the shivering mass of tissue.
I didn't recognise it.
When he came home I asked him
what it was.
He told me he took it to help me
that I was getting far too involved.
He felt he had to cool my attentions,
to make me distant,
to make me quiet.
I'm sure he didn't mean to leave it there for so long.
