The spa attendants quietly closed the door on their way out. Soothing music played softly in the dimly lit room. Aromatherapy scents filled the air.
AJ, this was a wonderful idea, sighed Abe, wiggling her toes in the foot soak.
AJ chuckled, With the way you were whining about your feet hurting, what else could I do?
I did not whine, she argued and received a pointed look. I havent power shopped with you since before Christmas. Im outta shape.
And this is my faulthow?
Its not, she replied. You know? I never thought I would enjoy a pedicure.
Youre turning into a regular girlie-girlday spas and all.
Then what does that make you, AJ?
Unique, baby!
True dat!
AJ turned in his seat to stare at her.
What?
True dat? True dat? You have been around the blonde kid too long.
Oh hush, she scolded.
We were all hopin youd be a good influence on him and now he has you talkin ghetto.
One slipjust one slip.
Thats all it takes girl. Soon youll be fuzizin your snudizzin.
Highly unlikely.
After a moment, AJ said, Abe say it for me.
Say what?
Fuzizin your snudizzin.
Rolling her eyes, she said, Ill be fuzizin my snudizzin. What did I just say?
Not a clue, but it was funny as hell, he said laughing. Damn, Ive missed this.
Me too, replied Abe, both of them becoming serious. AJ, can I ask you something?
Just did. Im kidding. Go ahead.
Have I become that friend I always hated?
What do you mean?
I always hated how some of my friends would suddenly have no time for me when they got a boyfriend. I dont want to be that, but I guess I have been. I suck.
No you dont Abe, the circumstances suck. I get that this is new and new for you. Its natural to want to spend lots of time with the person youre in love with, especially in the beginning. Things get complicated, because you have to keep this a secret. If you two could beumwhats the wordaffectionate anywhere, anytime then you wouldnt have to worry about being seen.
The attendants entered the room and the two friends went back to relaxing. AJ was so relaxed he doze off. He roused only when the attendant asked him about nail polish. He picked black, but Abe insisted he would be wasting the pedicure if he got black. So he settled on the iridescent color Abe was having applied.
Are we okay, asked Abe.
Were okay. I swear. I just got use to ya being there. Then you werent. Im happy for you. Hell Im even happy for him. I miss ya is all.
Im sorry AJ. Ill
Shut the hell up. Dont apologize and dont do anything. Shit, wed have to cut the cord in another month or so when the tours over. This way were just weaning ourselves off each other. My little Anna Bella is growing up, he said, pretending to cry.
One of us had to.
And it sure as hell aint gonna be me.
********
Miss Abe, a little birdie told me you are going to the Grammys.
Did they, asked Abe, coming to stand beside Mitchell as he worked on Kevins hair.
Mitchell said, Yes. As much as I want to hate you for getting to go, all will be forgiven if you let me do your hair.
Should I be afraid?
I would be, stated Kevin.
This from the man who wears skirts, replied Mitchell, clucking his tongue.
Hey now!
Kevin, darling, did I not say wear a skirt once and be fashion forward. Wear a skirt twice and become fashion victim?
You did.
And was I right.
Kevin mumbled.
What, asked Mitchell, hand on hip.
You were right.
Do I have to put you two in time out, asked Roger coming into the room.
No, they replied in unison.
They all listened as Roger went over some last minute details about the evenings meet & greet. He left as quickly as he arrived, leaving everyone to pick up where they left off.
So, Im doing your hair.
That didnt sound like a question.
It wasnt baby girl, replied Mitchell. Now run along. I need to deal Mr. Mans hair.
Abe walked away shaking her head. She bumped into Kim on her way out of the room.
Grammys, stated Kim.
Yep.
Lucky you.
Yeah. Kim, it seems Mitchell is doing my hair. If youre not too busy
Kim interrupted, Ill do it.
You will?
Yes. It will be a nice change from this bunch.
Now you know you love us, chided AJ, wiggling past them and plopping down on a couch.
The others I love, but you? Not so much, teased Kim and was rewarded with the one finger salute.
Have you got your dress?
No, she doesnt.
Thanks for answering for me Alexander.
Dont mention it, Anna
GRRRRR!
Who you growling at, asked Nick, trying to scoot past Kim, who was still in the doorway. Never mind, I see AJ. Must be him.
AJ flashed another one finger salute.
You know if you keep doing that and your finger may get stuck, warned Howie.
Ha! Ha! I get it now. Its give AJ shit day. I missed the memo.
Now, now, Honey Bear come see your Mitchell. Ive done as much as I can with Mr. Man.
Somebody who loves me, retorted AJ.
Anyway, Abe you dont have your dress yet, asked Kim, getting back on track.
Not yet. We searched for it today, but no luck.
Excuse me, called AJ from across the room. I seem to remember a couple of dress.
GRRR!
Honey Bear, I think better turn round and leave Miss Abe alone, stated Mitchell.
Im just sayin.
You mean the red one that made me look Miss Abe should be my new mistress name and required I carry a whip? Or the white one that was see-through and harnessed me up so high that my breast would have been pillows should I care to nap?
You looked damn hot!
I looked like a freakin hooker, she exclaimed, but couldnt help laughing.
Shopping with AJ is out, stated Kim. Well go out and look.
Thanks Kim, replied Abe, sincerely.
I can not believe y'all, griped AJ.
I know Honey Bear. I still love you.
Thank God!
Everyone in the room laughed.

Abe and Nick were tucked in bed, as the bus raced down the highway. Nicks head was resting on Abes chest. He was enjoying the feel of her playing with his hair.
Bella?
Yeah, she replied in a sleepy voice.
Tell me about these dresses.
Abe started laughing. What do you want to know?
Did they really look that bad?
Yes!
Silence.
Bella,
Yes, she replied, amused.
You could have bought them.
What?
Im just sayin.
Im not spending money on something Im not going to wear.
You could have worn them for me, Nick said, quietly.
Abe started to speak, but stopped herself. Nick tightened his hold her, afraid he had made her mad.
Finally, Abe said, Ill keep that in mind.
Nick only smiled.
