Next Friday comes soon. I love working at the hospital, so time flies. I'm gonna have a surprise fro Dunk and Lee this evening. I was supposed to go out with a bunch of friends, but two of them can't come. So Lee and Dunk can come with us instead. Luckily they didn't plan anything for the evening or tomorrow morning yet. They're coming here in about an hour. They insisted that they can come to my house by themselves, they're afraid I tire myself too much. I'm glad my teacher at the hospital gave me the whole day off for the visit to the gynecologist. I'm so nervous, I would have made loads of mistakes with the medicines!
Now I've cleaned up my room, and washing the dishes. I had to clean, because Dunk and Lee are staying the night. I guess Dunk's gonna sleep on the couch, and Lee in bed with me� Don't know how else� It's weird though! But it's not the thing I worry about, that's my baby� I can't stop putting my hand on my bump from time to time, but that's not very smart when you're washing the dishes!
The doorbell rings. Maybe the mailman or one of my roommates who forgot his keys? I dry my hands and open the door.
"Lee! Dunk! What are you doing here?" I call out surprised.
"What are we doing here? We came to see you!" Lee grins and gives me a big hug and a kiss on my cheek.
"Yeah I know," I poke my tongue out at him. "But you were supposed to come an hour later!"
"We wanted to surprise you," Dunk smiles cheekily.
"You succeeded!" I laugh and give him a big hug and a kiss on the cheek too.
"What were you doing?" Lee asks amused and points at my wet belly.
"Erm� washing the dishes," I grin.
"You're teaching that to the little one already?" Dunk laughs.
"Yeah, I don't have a dishwasher, you know," I laugh back.
"I told you she would be working on her day off," Dunk turns to Lee. He nods and grins at me.
"You sit down, we'll finish it for you. What do we have to do?"
"Erm� I didn't finish washing the dishes yet� and I have to do the toilet, the bathroom�" I say with a serious face.
"No way!" Lee calls out shocked. Dunk starts to laugh and goes to the wall where our cleaning schedule is attached.
"Nah, you only have to do the bathroom, isn't it?" he asks me. I nod grinning.
"Oh, you cheeky one!" Lee calls out at me.
"I already cleaned the bathroom. Wish I didn't�" I laugh. Lee points at me threatening.
"Stop it children! Now Iris sit down and relax. Lee, wash the dishes," Dunk pulls a serious face. I start to laugh and make Dunk laugh too. I sit down like he said, but I can't stay there for long. I'm way too nervous! But I can tell Dunk and Lee are nervous and excited too, they're fooling around all the time. They make me laugh without knowing it.
When they're finally finished, Dunk asks: "So, what time is the appointment?"
"In 30 minutes," I reply after a quick look at my watch.
"When do we have to leave than?" Lee frowns.
"Erm� in 20 minutes," I grin.
"It's this hospital?" he points out of the window.
"Yes. The university hospital, the same as where I work," I nod smiling. "Do you wanna see where I work? Than we have to leave now," I suggest.
"Yeah, I'd love to," Dunk gives me a big smile. Lee nods.
We put on our coats and walk to the hospital. I show them the pharmacy, they're pretty impressed! They're still fooling around though, trying to hide their nerves. Well, at least they make me less nervous.
It's time for my appointment so we go to the 4th floor. A nurse tells us to wait in the attending room.
"Jeez, why do we have to wait this long?" Lee sighs impatient after 10 minutes.
"Long? On a bad day you have to wait for 2 hours," I laugh.
"Two hours?" Lee calls out shocked.
"Don't worry, that's not today," I grin. "Sit down, you're making me nervous," I pull his hand so he stops walking around. "Read a magazine," I say with a blank face. I give both Dunk and Lee a magazine with loads of gossip.
Lee looks at me like I've gone crazy. "It's Dutch!" he calls out.
"Yes of course. So what?" I laugh out loud. "You'll understand all the crap without reading it. Just look at the pictures. Maybe you're in it," I grin.
Dunk's reading the magazine already. He's been learning Dutch for a while, I help him with it. Reading and translating the magazine together makes the time go faster. It's funny, Lee's also butting in from time to time with stupid questions or jokes.
"The doctor can see you now," the nurse calls me.
"Well, come on guys," I smile nervously. We go into the room and I shake the gynecologist's hand.
"So, who's with you?" she looks at Lee and Dunk surprised.
"They're my best friends. And Dunk's the father of the baby," I point.
"Ah, I see. How are you doing?" she asks me. While I lie down at the table-bed kind of thing, I tell her all about the pregnancy. After she's written everything down, she asks me to take my shirt and pants from my belly.
She puts some cold jelly on my bump and than moves a stick over it. On a monitor we see some things moving, but we can't make much of it until she explains what we see. She points out the head and legs.
"Is that� is that the heart?" I point.
"Yes, it is," she smiles. We see a little thing that moves very fast.
"Do you see it?" I turn at Dunk and Lee excited.
"Yeah! It's so small!" Lee nods excited. Dunk starts to smile broadly and grabs my hand.
"We're gonna listen to the heartbeat now," the gynecologist says.
Chounk-chounk-chounk-chounk-chounk-chounk.
It sounds high and very fast.
"OMG! That's our baby's heart," I whisper emotional and softly squeeze Dunk's hand. When I look up at him he quickly wipes away a tear. I smile at him and than smile at Lee.
"It's wonderful," Lee smiles back and strokes my hair.
"Everything looks and sounds perfectly healthy," the doctor says and ends the examination.
"Great! Thank you," I smile and clean my belly. We say goodbye and leave the room.
I feel really relieved. Everything's okay!
"Let's get something to eat. I'm f*cking hungry!" I call out and take them both by the hand.
"That's our girl! I already started to wonder why you hadn't eaten anything for a couple of hours," Lee laughs. I poke out my tongue at him.
"You wanna eat something healthy or�" Dunk asks me. I grin at him.
"Okay, Burger King it is! But than you have to get a healthy dinner," he sighs.
"Yummi!" Lee and I call out at the same time. We all burst out laughing. I'm still holding their hands so I drag them with me to the exit and we quickly go to the Burger King.
"Hey, what is it we're going tonight?" Lee suddenly asks.
"Oh! I almost forgot!" I start to grin.
"Yeah, what is it?" Dunk asks too.
"I'm not gonna tell you."
"Come on!" Lee begs.
"Iris!" Dunk threatens to put a burger into my face. I shake my head laughing.
"Please," Lee gives me the puppy look.
"Please please please," Dunk gives the puppy look too. They're both looking so cute! My heart melts.
"Okay, I can't resist that," I give up laughing. "I was supposed to go with 8 of my mates, but 2 of them can't go tonight. So you 2 can go with us instead."
"Are they all girls?" Lee asks.
"No, also guys," I shake my head.
"So it's not a girls' thing?" Dunk asks suspicious.
"No, it certainly isn't. You 2 guys are going to a real rock-concert tonight!"
