Chapter 54
"Hello?"
"Hi, it's Alex."
I'm quiet for almost a minute.
"Iris, are you there?" she asks.
"Alex? Is that really you?" I finally say.
"Yes, it's me."
"OMG! How are you?"
"I'm great. What about you?"
"I'm fine."
"How are mum and dad?"
"They're okay."
"And all the others? Family, friends? Anything happened?"
"Everybody's okay as far as I know. Erm� No, nothing special happened this year. Well, except for to me. And you, of course," I grin.
"To you? Tell me everything!"
"I will. But first I wanna know where you are."
"I'm at the airport now, I have to wait 4 hours for my flight."
"An airport? Where are you going?" I ask surprised.
"I'm coming home tomorrow."
"Home?" I call out. "You mean, here, to us, to the Netherlands?"
"Yes, that's what I mean," she laughs.
"OMG! My little sister is coming home!" I scream and jump around the room.
"Lee! Did you hear that? My sister Alex is coming home!" I scream.
"Yes, yes, I heard you. Calm down!" he laughs.
"I'm sorry Alex. Well, now at least you know that I'm happy that you're coming back," I apologize.
"It's okay. Hey, you're not alone?"
"No, Lee's with me. He's my best friend, he's staying here all weekend, so don't bother," I explain.
"Your best friend? I don't know him, do I?" she asks surprised.
"No. I told you a lot happened to me this year! How long ago is it that we last talked?"
"Eleven months. I left exactly eleven months ago."
"Wow, it seems so much longer ago. I missed you like hell!"
"I missed you even more. And our music," she sighs.
"Blue."
"Yes, Blue of course," she laughs.
"You didn't hear anything of them? No new songs, no news, no gossip?" I ask her curious.
"No, nothing. I've been at places where they didn't have pop music and newspapers. No radio, no tv."
Wow! Than she doesn't have a clue that I've been with Dunk for a long time!
"Hey, but how could you send us letters than?" I suddenly realize.
"Once a month a doctor came to the villages to bring medicines. I gave him the letters, and now I've traveled back with him."
"And for how long are you coming back now?" I ask, a bit scared of the answer.
"I'm coming to you and mum and dad for a couple of weeks, until I've found myself a house."
"OMG! You're really coming back! You're gonna search a house in the Netherlands, right?" I call out.
"Erm� no," she says careful.
"No?" I say disappointed.
"Come on, you shouldn't be surprised. You know my two dreams. The first one was living in the jungle. I made that dream come true. Now it's time for the opposite, my second dream. I'm gonna live in London."
"London?" I scream.
"Iris, calm down please! It's not as bad as it sounds. It's only one hour of flying, we can see eachother a lot of times. And you can visit me there, and than we're gonna make or fantasy come true: we're gonna meet Blue! They haven't split up, have they?" she talks really fast, to prevent me from interrupting her.
"No, no, they haven't split up," I say and start to laugh.
"What? Why are you laughing? Is it so stupid?" she asks.
"No," I laugh harder and harder.
"You don't like Blue anymore?"
"No, that's not it." I'm laughing my @ss off now. Lee's looking really amused at me, shaking his head smiling.
"Iris! Tell me what's going on!" Alex yells in the phone. I try to stop laughing. Lee gives me a glass of water and I calm down. I sit down next to him.
"Lee, are you okay with it if I tell her how we all met? I mean, you know the whole story. I can go to the kitchen if it bothers you," I ask. It will bring back loads of memories if I tell her how I fell in love with Dunk. I'm not sure Lee wants to hear it all over again�
"No, it's okay, stay here," he smiles. I give him a kiss on his cheek and lie down on the couch, my head on his lap.
"Sorry Alex, I'm back now. Are you sitting down? I'm gonna tell you what happened to me."
"Okay, I'm ready." I close my eyes and begin to tell.
"Remember that we bought tickets to the Awards show where Blue would perform? You suddenly left one week before that show. First I didn't want to go anymore, but than I imagined how angry you would get on me if you'd hear that I didn't use the tickets that we had so much troubles with to buy. But I couldn't stand the thought of going with somebody else than you, so I decided to go alone. I didn't have anything else to do that day, so I left really early. To my surprise I was one of the first who arrived. So when we could finally go inside, after many hours of waiting, I was standing at the front row. I could see everything perfectly, but to be honest I wasn't enjoying myself at all. All I could think of, was you. What you would say about the presenters' clothes, the hair, the artists, everything. Until Blue came. They were gonna perform two songs. The first song they did was 'If you come back'. It was so beautiful, and I felt so sad.
I watched you go, takin' my heart with you,

So if I did something wrong please tell me,
I wanna understand.
'cos I don't want this love to ever end.
I started to cry. I really couldn't help it, and couldn't stop it. I stood there, watching them, with tears rolling down my face."
I open my eyes and feel a tear falling from my eye. Lee's looking down at me and gives me a loving smile. He wipes the tear away and strokes my cheek. I smile back at him and close my eyes again. I go on telling.
"And than Duncan saw me. I swear, he looked right into my heart. He sang the last verse to me, not taking his eyes off me for a second.
I swear, if you come back in my life, I'll be there till the end of time, oh yeah.
And I swear, I'll keep you right by my side 'cos baby you're the one I want, oh yes you are.
He made me smile at the end, and he smiled back at me. The other song they did, was 'Too close'. Do you remember that funny life video of 'Too close'?"
"Yeah, we didn't stop laughing for at least 15 minutes the first time we saw it," Alex grins.
"Yes. That's how funny Duncan did. He made me laugh really hard. He didn't look at me the whole time, but he did look at lot of times. And he kept standing right in front of me almost the whole time. Before they left the stage, he grinned at me. A bit later they came on stage again, to give an award to someone else. When they appeared on stage, they walked past me. Duncan bent over to me, reached for my hand and put a little piece of paper in it. He gave me the sweetest smile I had ever seen, with his beautiful blue eyes. I was so surprised I didn't do or say anything. He walked on to the middle of the stage, with the others. I looked at the piece of paper, something was written on it.
'I'm glad I could make you smile, even laugh. Are you alone? Will you meet me backstage after the show? I'll be waiting for you. Duncan xxx'
I read it three times, to be sure my eyes weren't fooling me. Than I looked up at Duncan, to see if it wasn't a joke. He was looking at me expectantly. I nodded at him, and a big smile spread across his face. I don't remember what happened during the rest of the show. All I could think of, were those beautiful blue eyes and his sweet smile, just a few inches away from my face. After the show I hurried away from the crowd. Duncan was indeed waiting for me backstage. 'Hi, I'm really glad you came,' he smiled at me and gave me three kisses. 'How could I say no?' I had to grin. 'What's your name?' he asked me. 'Oh, I'm sorry, I totally forgot to introduce myself. I'm Iris,' I quickly said. I felt so embarrassed! 'Really nice to meet you Iris.' 'Nice to meet you too. Usually I'm not so ill-mannered, but�' I smiled. 'But you were kind of shocked? Nervous?' he grinned. 'I was gonna say: but I had a hard time.' I had to grin again, because he was looking a bit surprised that he didn't guess the right reason. 'You came here alone?' he asked me curious. 'Yes, I was supposed to come with my sister, but�' my voice stopped working. 'But?' he asked caring. 'Oh, I'm sorry. You don't have to tell me, it's none of my business,' he suddenly realized. But it already felt the first tears in my eyes. I told him about your leaving, he cheered me up, and we talked for a long time. When he had to leave with the others after a couple of hours, he made me promise we would meet again soon. We exchanged phone numbers and said goodbye."
