FOURTH GRADE
Fourth grade students change every nine weeks.  They begin learning the basic Elements of Design by creating an animal book.  They must draw pictures of animals using lines, dots and dashes.  These must be drawn like they are on the reference pages.  This teaches the students to see lines and shapes, not objects.  After they have completed a series of animals, they compile them into a book that is graded on neatness and the way they followed directions.

I enjoy seeing the excitement in the student's faces as they experienced art for the first time.  Many are amazed that they can create the projects that are assigned to them.  If they continue to take art, their skills will be extradorinary by the time they reach High School.
