On this page I will show how I constructed a length of stair rail from its beginning as a full size shop drawing until it was ready for painting.

This a drawing of one half of the rail. Even thought it is slanted to go up the stairs it is symmetrical about the center. By drawing one half of it I am able to determine the shapes of all the scrolls.

Here the frame and the first scrolls have been assembled on the table. The railing is much longer than my table, so the protruding end is supported by sawhorses. I checked (and corrected) each piece of the frame for straightness and twist. I level the frame using small steel wedges so that it is all in one plane.
