- She is Bastian's mother who died when he was young. She believed that we are all part of a Neverending Story, and she was not wrong as bastian later found out.
- It is often debated if Bastian gave the Childlike Empress his mothers name, and in many
ways he did. Selene is Greek for "Moon Goddess" and/or "Of the Moon".
Either of those can easily be translated into Moonchild.
