Jan Tshichold was a renowned typographer I personllay feel that his greatest contribution to the design world are his books. He has written a nuber of books on the subject of typography. This ensures that his ideas can be preserved for the new generation.
His book 'Die Neue Typographie' or The New Typography, has been recognised as the definitive treatise on book and graphic design in the machine age.
Tschichold has been celebrated as an early proponent of the modernist assymetric typography. Designers have increasingly come to respect his earlier calligraphic and later classical works.
A person with passion and persistendce will go far. Jan Tschichold was a fine example. The various books he had written proves that he is a great teacher. However, whatever style or rules one follows there is always a difference between the work of the creative designer and the competent workman. All Tschichold's work had a quality that makes it distinctive and distinguished, neer boring. There is a meticulous sense of surprise in an unexpected material.
His strength in typography is reflected even in his poster designs. He loves to composite mainly in letters to create his design.
He played a major role for printing. He managed to design a sensible font for the use of both linotype and monotype printers. The Sabon font is what he hoped to be remembered by and managed to achieve.
As a typographer, he is a pioneer in many ways. During his career, he was initially championing 'modern' typography. He later moved more towards a classical approach.
His mistake was that he had been overly critical of other type of design when he was championing 'modern' typography. His statementssswere clearly stated in his earlier books. His later works contradicted to what he said in his earlier books.
However, his works are still highly regarde until today.
Anoher weakness is that he does not explore much on graphics preffering to use typography as his main design, so as not to distract the users from the content.
