Dear all,

I have been in contact with all of you about the assembling of a small strings ensemble to accompany the choir at the Graduation Ceremony of University College Utrecht. Now that some more specific information is available about the times and places of performance and rehearsals, I would like to know of all of you whether you are still willing to play and

First about the set-up. The Graduation Ceremony takes place in the Dom Church in Utrecht in the afternoon of May 28th, and consists of a number of very boring speeches, the giving of the diplomas to the graduates and a performance of the choir. The choir consists of about 25 people and they will sing (among other piano-accompanied or a cappella songs) "Cantique de Jean Racine" (Op. 11) by Gabriel Fauré and we will accompany this in the transcription of John Rutter (Oxford), that is, for strings ensemble and harp. Originally there were only violas, so the violin parts are written by me and mostly double the corresponding viola parts.

We will use minimal rehearsals, as harp and bass players will probably have to come from the conservatory and I don't want to bother them with many rehearsals. This means for you that the level will be moderately high; i.e. I will expect you all to be able to play your sheet music very well once we start rehearsing. We will then focus on some difficult parts, intonation, and the musical interpretation. We will practice once with the choir, assuming that everything will go well enough, and perhaps have an evening in the Dom to get used to the acoustics.

The dates and times have provisionally been set as follows:

Wed May 5th    20:00-21:00 first try (mainly for those who have basic questions, not required for everybody)

Sun May 16th   20:00-22:00 strings & harp only rehearsal    [in the UC Auditorium]

Thu May 20th   19:00-22:00 tutti     [in the UC Auditorium]

Thu May 27th   early morning rehearsal   approx. 8:45-10:00     [in the Dom] :

Fri May 28th   12:00 - 17:00    [in the Dom]

Below you find how I have divided the parts so far. You can find them online in PDF format (so you can view and print them) at www.geocities.com/faurecantique/.

Violin

I Nikki

I Anna

I Janneke

II Ruth Waumans

II Frederik van Oudenhoven

II (Viola) Annemieke van Laarhoven

Cello

I Madelon de Rooy

As you can see, we are still looking for cello, double bass and harp players. If you know someone, feel free to ask them to contact me if they are interested.

So, I hope that that is enough for now.

Finally, I'm sure it's going to be a lot of fun!

Ciao,

Floris

Dear all,

There has been a change in the rehearsal times, since

[1] the rehearsal on wednesday may 19th was interfering with that of the USKO.

and

[2] the Dom rehearsal could not take place in the evening but only in the morning.

The new times are:

Wed May 5th    19:00-20:00 first try (mainly for those who have basic questions, not required for everybody)

Please everybody; I would like to have from all of you a confirmation that you can or cannot be present during these rehearsals. I try to put as little demand on your time as possible, since you are all busy people, so please, for these few rehearsals try to free up time. It's going to be worth it if we're all there!

So everybody mail me whether you can or cannot come!

Ciao,

Floris
