my name is lernie. born in the year of the dragon
and in one of the ten most polluted cities in the world. i graduated from
the university of the philippines in the college of fine arts with a bachelor's
degree in visual communications - an fancily adopted term only to mean
advertising. however, having done passably well in that course i, unlike
most of my college mates, forsook advertising after graduating. instead,
i had animation in mind.
i never took the elective animation course that the
college offered- something i regret - but i unconsciouly tried to compensate
by presenting a hand-drawn, computer-aided (corelmove) animation for one
of my graphic theses. it wasnt a big parade, but it was thoroughly satisfying
personally. at that point i was already aware of three-d animation; i
just hadnt the resources to procure them. however, the chance came when
working as a two-d animator, i was presented lightwave 5.0 to use. learning
it was no small task; the internet at that time was inaccessible to me
for a price that i could afford - especially on a regular basis. i had
to resort to a single reference book.but it was totally a blessing not
to have outside help. i'm admittedly cocky on that aspect: the road of
discovery is something that i pride myself in loving: in a network where
all manner of simplistic questions abound, questions that could be answered
by the questioner if committed to some sort of initiative or desire, i
am thankful that i did not even have the option of running to mailing
lists for help although i am convinced that they are still an indispensible
knowledge base.
on other things: poetry and music are as much a part
of me as animation is. often, poetry especially, takes precedence of everything
else. fortunately, poetry does not demand ingratefully and oftentimes
yields to satisfying sums - unlike that of music or art, which necessitate
great labor pains yet do not produce as reliably. music, however, captures
me and it is indispensible, not merely as a tool but a way by light. if
it can be accepted that poetry completes music, then music completes the
moving story.
animation, per se, is not what i am pursuing. the
meat lies in stories: writing boards is as fulfulling as animating them.
i'd gage that the art of animation is only meaningful as the story it's
trying to massage. otherwise, it's just a technical chore, having value
as a chore, and as enjoyable as a chore.
