Country cabinet makers made their greatest contribution to our furniture heritage in the design and construction of large case pieces, an achievement largely forced upon them by the prevalence of stone farm houses. These homes did not lend themselves to closets, so in an effort to solve their storage problem, the people who lived in them develped a variety of cupboards to hold their dishes, preserves, cooking utensils and clothing.
