| Pieris brassicae � Large White (Pieridae)
Appearance: A familiar butterfly with a wingspan ranging from 58 mm to 65 mm. Males have black tips on the yellowish-white forewing, while the females in addition to that have also two black dots on the forewing. The hindwing is yellowish-white on both sexes and without markings. The underside of the hindwing is slightly more yellowish than its upperside. Females are usually larger than males. Pieris rapae (Small White) and Pieris napi (Green Veined White) bear a close resemblance to Pieris brassicae, but are considerably smaller. Geographical distribution/ habitat: Worldwide except Australian region. One of the most successful butterflies of Europe. An urban butterfly, common in many habitats. Presents migratory behaviour eg. In Europe. Migrates to Northern Europe and Scandinavia from South of Europe particularly in April to May. Host plants: Cruciferous plants such as cabbage family, and nasturtium. Food plants: flowers.
