Chapter Fifteen

The scene had not changed with the exception that the others had already lost interest and filed out of her room to search elsewhere. The usual liveliness Lina brought to her room had faded, leaving nothing but a bleak mesh of vague and translucent emotions passing by and by again. How did everything suddenly get so out of hand? Zell felt like it was just yesterday they'd been sitting in that field together, his fingers fiddling with the little box in his pocket. He noticed that very necklace lying innocent on her pillow and picked it up with his shaking fingers. Zell stood there for a long time with the dainty necklace in his hand. Why did it seem so plain now when it had appeared so brilliant on Lina just the other day? I can't live without you, Zell...

"Damn, Lina... You really meant it, didn't you?" Zell muttered. He tucked the necklace away into his pocket, stepped out of her room and shut the door behind him taking a deep breath. He wouldn't cry, wouldn't dare himself to absorb the information--at least not until he reached the safety of his own room. On his way back Sadie stopped him and attempted to catch his attention again, but he'd never let it happen again. He shooed her off and went on his way down the corridor. Sadie stood shocked; however, she'd been expecting it for quite some while--she just didn't want it to end, the fairy tale bliss, but that's just how it goes.

Sadie crooned for him to pay attention to her, reminding him what a great time they'd had together the day before or how much she had adored his nonchalant behavior. Zell glared at her as she stood in his doorframe pleading like an idiot for admiration from someone whom she knew she'd never have. It was simply pathetic. With that, he slammed the door shut in her face. That was the final straw, he didn't care whether or not the door had hit her, he actually hoped it did--she deserved it, the bitch.

Everything went by slowly for a week or so. Zell would only let himself shed tears whilst he was alone in his room. Each day was just another hell hole. He rarely spoke to the others unless asked questions, and then his answers were as short as he could make them. Everything in his world seemed so stale now, laughter had lost its beauty knowing it wasn't coming from Lina, pain felt like nothing compared to the numb he'd been encased in since that very day. "He acts like a ghost now..." people would whisper about him as he passed by slowly, ignoring their comments although he could hear them clearly.

One evening in his room, he was fiddling with the necklace he'd so thoughtfully picked out for her and immediately started to shed tears. It was pitiful, almost hilarious, he thought that a man like him would even think to let himself cry, but he couldn't care less. He could only understand the stinging fact that Lina was gone and he was doomed to a life without her tender kiss or her sweet embrace. He wouldn't keep it to himself anymore, he couldn't endure the pain of not having Lina right by his side. "Why'd you go?" Zell asked her. No answer. Never an answer.

Help me, Zell...
