Chapter One

Lina Heartilly, an eighteen year old with black hair and coffee brown eyes, was lying on her stomach in her medium sized bed. She was studying for her exams. Lina was an instructor at Balamb Garden, but instructors have to take exams as well as the students. She had her blankets pulled to the side to make more room for her books which piled up like a mountain. She was a dilligent instructor and was determined to study everything that she thought would appear on the test before actually thinking about what might be on it.

Her boyfriend, Zell Dincht, was standing next to her. He had spiked blond hair and misty blue eyes. They were a friendly couple who were playful and slightly immature, but when it came to love, they understood exactly what it was because the two of them were in love; it was something so powerful that it could move mountains, shatter windows, defeat enemies.

"This is boring," Zell complained as Lina flipped through a thick old book with thin, torn pages. The words in the book were tiny and ancient, probably the smallest font, but she would still skim through the pages quickly, catching the main points and storing them in her head. The pages were hard to turn through because the book was so large; the mere cover of the book could probably fit six large hands with their fingers spread out as far as possible.

"I have to study for the exams," Lina said firmly as she accidentally tore a page out and tried to stuff it back in. Her hand traced the outline of the leathery binding of the large brown book as Zell waltzed over and sat down next to her, looking down at her with great affection.

"Come on, let's do something else!" he sighed. Lina stared up at him and he put on the saddest looking face he could. Lina smiled at him, but he continued to portray his forlorn facial expression and beautiful blue yearning eyes.

"Zell..." she said in a slightly whiny tone, then she ignored his request for the time being and continued to skim over the torn up book. Lina adjusted her legs on the bed, kicking them far out at a slant and straightened her shirt as she once again flipped through her ancient book. Zell sighed and watched her tear yet another page out unintentionally and stuff it back in.

Zell reached out and flipped her over suddenly; she seemed surprised by this and her cheeks were already flushed red. He pushed her arms to the side with his hands, and then closed the book in front of her face. Lina frowned at him, but he smiled widely at her, showing all of his gleaming white teeth, and patted her cheek with his left hand. Zell leaned down and kissed her passionately on the lips.

With her free hand, Lina struggled as she grasped at the torn binding of the ancient book and picked it up with an effort. Lina hit Zell over the head gently with the thick book as he attempted to part her lips and start a make out session.

"He-e-ey!" he pulled away and whimpered as he rubbed the back of his head. Lina sat up, looking extremely flustered, her cheeks rosy red.

"Lina has to study," she said teasingly as she gave his hand a squeeze. Then, she dusted off her ancient book as if it needed to be dusted off more than it needed to be totally repaired and opened it again wearily. Yeah...she knew she'd much rather be kissing Zell right now. Zell sat at the very end of the bed with a slightly offended look on his face.

"I can't believe you pick your books over me," he shook his head morosely. Lina looked at him with her eyebrows raised, wondering if Zell actually believed that. She sighed, smiling and turned to him, closing the brown book gladly.

"Of course not, baby," she said soothingly as she crawled over to him on all fours like a puppy walking to her owner. Zell held his arms out warmly as Lina crawled into his warm embrace and sat sideways in his lap, as content as could be. She looked at him, her famous halfmoon smile beaming at him.

"Gotcha," he yelled as he stood with her in his arms and swung her around a couple of times. He then landed her safely on her feet and leaned close to her for another kiss. Lina could feel the heat returning to her cheeks again. He smiled childishly. "Lina has to study," he whispered playfully into her ear.

"Argh," Lina backed off and slapped him over the back of his head gently, still blushing . She then returned to her books and continued studying the material. Zell sat next to her on the floor and stared blankly into the vast nothingness before him. He was extremely bored and was still scheming more plots to get Lina's attention away from her stupid books.

"Don't you have to take the exams too?" Lina queried him, for he too, was an instructor as well as student. She tried using this question to start up some conversation because after a while the silence seemed disturbing. Zell continued to stare into space dreamily. To Lina it seemed that he was looking at none other than the wall; she wondered how interesting the pearl white walls could be.

"Already did," he said dully, his eyes still transfixed on nothing. "They were hella easy." Lina nodded idly and turned away from her books to try and see what he was staring at, moving her face right up next to his to get a good view. "It was like junctioning magic! Don't you trust me?!" he asked, his eyes wide in apprehension. Lina almost fell over at the sudden jerk in his head and his voice.

"Of course I do!" Lina stood up immediately, a little offended by the comment. Zell smirked, he had caught her in his trap.

"Then let's do something else!" Zell laughed sarcastically. He looked up at her helplessly for an answer. Lina looked up and pursed her lips comtemplatively, considering the outcome of his request.

"Fine..." Lina shrugged reluctantly.
