Chapter
Two: "Intruder Alert!!!"
“What the fuck was that?” AJ said tentatively, “because, ya know…it damn
sounded like a little kid.”
All three of them stood there motionless in the garden. Brian cleared his throat
as there came a wailing noise again. “Uh…shall we go look?” And, Without
waiting for a reply, he walked down to the gate and stood next to Nick, who
hadn’t moved.
Brian poked him. “Err Nick dude, could ya just budge a second while I go see
what kind of small object – living or not – is habituating in our back yard?”
Nick stepped out of the way. “Much obliged, dude.”
(A.N: by the way…I’m not American so I don’t know much about your
jargon, but I'm trying!)
Brian pushed open the gate whilst both Nick and AJ stared over his shoulder.
“Holy shit.” Brian turned to face the other two. “What the fuck?! Okay, I
don’t mean to alarm you but there is a baby in our back yard."
“I didn’t think they grew in winter,” AJ smiled. Brian hit him in the
chest.
“Ha-ha…but seriously, there really is a baby on our lawn. Go look.”
AJ shoved past Brian and stepped into the back garden – he opened his mouth in
shock. “Fucking fucking fucking fucking hell.” He took a deep breath. “You
know what? I don’t know a lot about babies. I don’t know a lot about
anything actually, but I do know that that baby isn’t meant to be in our
garden. In light of this revelation and discovery, my immediate reaction is to
run away.” He put on a spooked voice. “I sense baaaaaaaaaad things!”
As AJ turned to walk back out the driveway, Brian grabbed his arm. “If you
leave me now, I will personally haunt you ‘til the end.”
AJ laughed nervously. “Okay, fine.” He paused. “So…what are we going to
do?”
Brian shrugged – “I dunno.”
AJ turned to Nick. “Okay, what are we gonna do?”
Nick looked blankly at AJ. “Don’t ask me.”
AJ sighed. “Well you’re the one with all the little brothers and sisters and
cousins and nephews and nieces and friggin’ beanie babies…so uh, c’mon
help me out here.”
Nick turned to look at the garden. In the middle of the lawn was a Mose’s
basket, with a tiny bundle dressed in pink sitting in it. Nick supposed it was a
girl because, firstly she wore all pink, and secondly … well … all the baby
stuff around her was pink too. There was a pink pram, a pink high chair, a pink
bag, a large pink elephant and a pink car seat.
He took a deep breath. “Well we can’t just leave her here...”
“Continue,” barked AJ.
“And so yeah…should we not find out whose she is…I mean maybe it’s one
of the neighbour's or something. Maybe she’s lost. Yeah that’s probably
it.” Nick glanced at Brian and AJ, both of whom were frowning. The baby let
out a small sob and the three of them turned to stare at her.
Pulling his sleeves over his hands, Brian tore his eyes away from the small pink
bundle and looked directly at Nick. “Good thinking Nick…but tell me exactly
how a baby that size got lost with all that stuff?!”
Thoughtfully Nick answered, “Maybe someone put her here.” He paused. “How
the hell would I know?”
At this point Brian cut in – “Okay, okay – enough. It doesn’t matter who
she belongs to, we’ll deal with that later. Let’s just get her in the warm
first because I’m freezing my nuts off and I’ll bet you she is too.”
AJ sniggered. “Freezing her nuts off, eh? Tut tut I guess you have a lot to
learn about girls, Bri my friend!”
Brian ignored this totally, thinking it inappropriate. “Okay, so yeah let’s
go pick her up…actually, you know what? I don’t 'do' babies. Nick you get
her.”
Nick didn’t move, instead stared at Brian. “Why me?”
“Because you’re…you’re…you’re the youngest.”
Nick laughed. “What kind of an excuse is that?!”
“I don’t know,” whined Brian, “But it’s an excuse. So err…go on.”
He poked Nick (again). “Go get her.”
Nick rolled his eyes. “Okay, okay fine. Jeez it’s just a baby.” He stomped
off across the grass and crouched next to the basket/crib, peering down inside.
The small pink bundle was sitting up and staring at her lap, sobbing
occasionally with her hands over her ears. Nick couldn’t see her face because
she had her hood up, plus a pink bobble hat pulled down low.
He turned and looked pleadingly at Brian and AJ, both of whom were huddled by
the gate still. “She’s not moving.”
“So say something to her,” AJ prompted.
“What do I say?” hissed Nick, as panic overtook him. “She looks quite
little…she probably can’t understand anyway,” he finished, still
whispering.
“Yeah, well all the more reason to say what the hell you like, okay?”
AJ crossed his arms defiantly, as Nick turned and looked at the pink bundle
again.
