Chapter Three: "Pink bundles"

Nick took a deep breath, opened his mouth…and then closed it again. Impatient tutting noises from the front of the gate told him to say something to the bundle. Okay fine, he thought, I can do this…

“Um…hey there, are you alright?” The pink thing didn’t respond, but as she sobbed her shoulders moved up and down jerkily.

“Have you…have you lost your mom?” Nick continued quietly.

Impatiently, AJ yelled: “Of course she’s lost her mom you retard – that’s why we’re in this mess!”

Nick stared at the baby, whose sobs became louder. “Do you want to come indoors…so we can find your mom?”

All of a sudden, the small pink bundle looked up and straight at Nick. From what he could tell, she had large blue eyes and a tiny little, pretty face. She looked about one or two. Feeling brave, he carried on.

“Hi. I’m Nick. I live here with those two loons over there. They’re called AJ and Brian.” Nick pointed over to them both and the baby followed his finger, staring in their general direction.

Nick looked pleadingly at Brian, who motioned for him to carry on. “Err…so, um, yeah shall we go and find your mom – I’m sure she must be wondering where you are by now?”

The little baby’s bottom lip trembled and she broke down into floods of tears, mumbling incoherently as she cried into her hands. “Wa goon ga see to to ma ma ga ga mom mom mom.”

Nick looked helplessly at AJ and Brian. “I think she wants her mom.”

Sarcastically, AJ retorted, “Oh, ya think?”

“Yeah I do actually. So just shut the fuck up and give me a hand here. PLEASE!”

As Nick yelled, the pink thing’s cries grew louder and he watched as she tried to pull herself out of the basket, slipping over on her blanket in the process. This only made her cry even more as she lay facedown in the basket, seemingly too distressed to move.

AJ shoved Nick out the way and sat beside the basket. “Hey there sweetheart, what’s the matter? Did you hurt yourself?” The baby took no notice of AJ, but continued desperately trying to scramble away from the basket, slipping each time.

“She’s really going to hurt herself in a minute if we don’t do something.” AJ looked poignantly at Nick and Brian who both shrugged. “Okay fine.”

AJ leant over the basket and, putting his hands around the little girl’s tummy, lifted her gently out of the basket and stood her up on the grass. Immediately she sat down, crying loudly. “Dude, what do I do?” AJ looked desperately at Brian.

“Here let me have a go. She’s probably frightened.”

He knelt down next to the sobbing bundle and picked her up, hugging her against his chest. “Hey there little lady, don’t cry – it’s okay, we’re not going to hurt you.”

Her cries got louder. “Hey hey hey. Shhhhh. Just calm down…that’s it, calm down.”

The little girl looked at him, her face streaming with tears.

“Awww real tears,” said Brian as he brushed them away, “Why you crying?”

The pink bundle paused, looking tearfully at Brian and replied “Mom mom gtoooo frrhhmu me ha coo.”

“Yeah me too,” AJ remarked, “I bought it in pink the other week.”

He chuckled to himself, ignoring Brian’s evil glare.
