Chapter One: "Hearing things"

It had been a long day at the photo shoot and everyone wanted to go home, so it was a relief when the Backstreet Boys’ manager Steve finally yelled:

“Okay guys, that’s enough for today. That’s a wrap – take yourselves home and get some sleep ‘cause I want you back here tomorrow early. Early. Okay Nick – did you catch that?!”

Nick flushed. “Yeah I heard.”

AJ laughed loudly as Nick stomped his way over to get a can of drink from the machine. “Oh don’t you worry Stevey boy, we’ll make sure he’s here at the crack of dawn for ya. Won’t we Bri?”

Brian tore his eyes away from his cell phone to look at AJ. "What? Oh. Yeah. We will. Sure we will. Uh-huh." He paused. “Hold on – what have I just promised we’ll do?”

AJ rolled his eyes. “Never mind. Anyway are you ready?”

Brian nodded. “Ready as I’ll ever be.”

“Good,” AJ mumbled as he sipped on a can of Coke. “Nick get your butt here, we’re going.”

(A.N: Nick, AJ and Brian live together. Well, at least they do in my story!)

Nick moped his way out of the kitchen area, following AJ and Brian out of the building. “See ya Kev, See ya Howie, see ya everyone,” he yelled, letting the door slam behind him.

Nick crossed the grounds to AJ’s bright yellow car, parked just a few yards from the building their management owned, climbing into the back seat (owing to the fact that Brian was already in the front.) “Man I’m tired,” he murmured, resting his head on his hands.

“Aren’t we all sonny,” pipped up AJ from the driver’s seat. “Now what shall we listen to to wake ourselves up a bit?” He rummaged around in the little music cd container thingy in the car. “Aha! I think a bit of Oasis would go down a treat.”

Brian groaned. “For fuck’s sake AJ, please not Oasis. Anything … just not them, okay?”

AJ laughed quietly. “Okay…what about…uh…those adorable Nsync fellas? I hear they’ve got a great album out!”

Brian covered his eyes with his hands and began to rock back and forth on the chair. “Arrrrrrrrrrgh I take it back. Put Oasis on, put damn Oasis on if you must.” He looked seriously at AJ, who was stopped at the traffic lights. “Please – not N Stink.”

“If you insist,” laughed AJ, slipping the Oasis cd into the player. “You know you love them really.”

“Ya think?” Brian grinned and stared into the wing-mirror, watching Nick practically fall asleep on the back seat. “Fuckin’ hell, looks like lil’ Nick’s had a few too many early starts!”

AJ twisted around to stare at Nick, who was laying spread out across the back seat, his mouth wide open. *Smirk* “Bless him – I guess he just needs a wake-up call.”

AJ and Brian giggled madly as they turned the corner and headed down the drive to their house. AJ somehow managed to park the car, then turning to Brian says:

“Ok, on the count of three – one two three … NICKOLAAAAAAAAAAAAAS!”

Nick woke up with a start and stared wildly around the car, “What, what did I do? Is someone hurt?” He caught sight of AJ and Brian doubled over in laughter. “Yeah ha-ha very funny. So funny I can’t even be bothered to laugh.”

He opened the car door and started across the driveway, Brian and AJ still hysterical in the car. “Guys, c’mon. It’s freezing out here.”

“Well you’d better let yourself in then hadn’t you, Einstein,” said Brian in between hoots of laughter.

“Ya good idea that. I wonder why I didn’t think if it my self…oh I know! Maybe it was because I don’t have my keys,” Nick yelled angrily.

“Uh … well I can see how that might be a problem,” AJ said loudly as he and Brian got out of the car. “Lucky for us, I happened to remember mine.”

Nick rolled his eyes. “Yeah, well yay for you. It’d be even better if you opened the door because it’s really cold and-"

Nick stopped and turned to look behind him. “Do you hear that?” he said to AJ and Brian, who were approaching the front door. They said nothing. Nick crossed the front garden and around to the gate around the side, and put his ear against the gate.

Brian sighed. “Nickolas, what’re you doing?”

No answer.

“Earth to Ni-ick.”

No answer.

“Hello?”

Angrily, Nick turned and faced Brian and AJ (who had reappeared on the porch), with his finger to his lips. “Be quiet a sec.”

“For fuck’s sake, Nick,” AJ said quietly. “Look man, you’re tired. You need some sleep – you’re hearing things now so just-"

But the sound of a baby crying prevented AJ from finishing his sentence
