I shouldn’t have walked away
{chapter 2}
“Then
one day he met a girl and went out with her. I was so sad. You can’t imagine!
I still smiled but somehow Nick was able to tell the difference and he asked me
what was wrong. I told him I didn’t feel good and I maybe was getting sick. He
said he would stay with me at home instead of going on his date with the girl. I
told him to go on the date because I would have felt guilty if he didn’t. he
said he’d like it better to stay with me. I told him not to lie to me and to
get his ass up for his date. He looked at me sadly, stood up and went on his
date. I was crying after that because I felt so alone. I wanted him to love me
and not the other girl, but that was the point of time when I gave up.” Lauren
told Katie.
**FLASHBACK**
Nick went over to Lauren’s to visit her and to talk to her. In about 1 hour he
had a date with his new girlfriend, but he didn’t feel like going. Nick rang
the bell and Lauren opened, looking kind of sad in her eyes but half- smiling
with her mouth.
“hi Nick, come in.” She said letting him in.
“hey, I came to talk to you. Lately you stopped smiling. I’d really like to
know what’s wrong. We’re friends, remember? You can tell me everything!”
he said. Lauren hated the sound of the word ‘friends’.
“Nothings wrong.” She said still fake-smiling “I’m just not feeling very
well. I think I catched a flu or something like that.”
“Oh” Nick said, not believing her “then I’ll stay with you!”
“No, you have a date with Mary! You can’t stay here.” Said Lauren.
“I can. And I will.” Said Nick.
“Why? Don’t you want to see her?” asked Lauren, getting upset because she
thought he was lying to her.
“Of course Id like to see her, but Id rather stay here with you. You’re
feeling not well and all.” He responded.
“NO, NICK! STOP LYING TO ME! JUST GO ON YOUR DATE WITH MARY AND LEAVE ME ALONE!”
Lauren screamed with tears in her eyes.
Nick looked at her, sadly. He reached out to touch her cheek but then decided
against it, stood up, turned around and walked away. While walking away he
whispered to himself: “why do you do that to me, Lauren?” she heard him but
didn’t know what he meant. When he was out of the door she broke down crying.
She asked herself why she couldn’t be Mary and why she’d never be as pretty
as her but noone answered her. She cried herself into sleep.
**FLASHBACK END**
“After that I tried not to care about it anymore. I still did, deep inside of
me, but I got better and better at hiding it. I pretended to be the happy girl I
was before I started feeling different for Nick. I was so good at pretending
that everybody thought I had the happiest life ever. But anyhow I sometimes
wished Nick knew it because it was so hard for me to keep that secret. I had
nobody to talk about it back then because Nick has been the only one I’ve been
telling my secrets.” Said Lauren.
**FLASHBACK**
Lauren walked over to Nick’s house, grinning widely as always. She knocked and
waited for him to open. He opened, said hi, let her in and went to the living
room with her where Mary was waiting for Nick.
“Lauren, you know Mary.” He said.
“Yeah, hi Mary!” Lauren said, smiling, and shook Mary’s hand. Mary smiled
back and shook Lauren’s hand, too.
“So, does anybody wants to drink something?” asked Nick.
“Yeah, but you don’t have to get it for me. I’m going to get me a coke
myself.” Said Mary.
When Mary was in the kitchen Nick asked Lauren: “So, how are you feeling?”
“Great. Why do you even ask?” said Lauren, grinning.
“Because I wanted to know. And I care about you.” Nick said.
“Did you think I ain’t feeling well? Do I look like I feel bad?” Lauren
asked.
“If I only knew why you’re pretending to be happy if you’re not.”
Thought Nick. But said instead of this: “No you look happy as always!” in a
sarcastic tone. However Lauren didn’t notice it.
**FLASHBACK END**
