Chapter Six

The next morning…

“So do you like it?” Louisa asked her daughter, as they sat at the kitchen table. One of the few items of furniture they actually had there already.

Madison wrinkled her nose, before breaking out into a broad grin. “I like it,” she confirmed. “But there no fings.”

“No things? What? Oh – you mean like furniture stuff?!” asked Louisa, holding a bottle of milk in her baby son’s mouth. He sucked hungrily as his big brown eyes looked inquisitively around the new room. Madison nodded. “Well…the men are going to bring all the stuff around this morning in their van, so you can help me sort it out, ok?” said Louisa.

Madison nodded, chewing thoughtfully on a piece of toast. “Where my friends mummy,” she said.

Louisa smiled gently. “Awww sweetheart. Your friends from Nanny and Grandad’s are back in their houses and your other friends are back in London, aren’t they?”

Before moving in with her parents, Louisa had been living in London with Craig, her then-boyfriend. But when they’d split up he’d come back to the USA where he’d been brought up. Bizarrely, she’d followed suit – staying with her parents who’d emigrated out to America recently, as a result of the London ‘rat race.’ Louisa liked America, but it wasn’t the same as back home.

Madison pouted, looking stubbornly at her mummy. “New friends?” she added hopefully, watching baby Dylan spit out his bottle. Evidently he had had enough.

“You’ll have new friends baby,” assured Louisa, wiping Dylans mouth with a bib. “I gotta get you enrolled at Kindergarten actually and there’ll be lots of boys and girls for you to play with there. Now can you look after baby Dylan in the lounge for me while I clear up the kitchen please?”

“Yes,” she replied, sliding off her chair and putting a soggy crust back on her plate. “Are all the fings going?” she asked.

Louisa looked confused for a moment. “Going? Do you mean coming?! Yeah – the men will be here in a second with all our stuff.”

Madison smiled happily in anticipation – all she wanted was to get her toys back. She’d spent a whole morning without them.
