Chapter Seven
“Ben!
What are you doing, buddy?” Brian yelled up the stairs. He hadn’t heard a
sound from his son for at least ten minutes – a sure sign of trouble, Brian
had learnt.
“Playing cars,” came the sheepish reply. Ben emerged at the top of the
stairs, peering down. “But … I get bored.”
“You GOT bored, huh?” said Brian. “So why don’t you come downstairs and
watch a video or something?” Ben nodded, crawling backwards down the stairs.
But, as he was half way down, the doorbell rang. Brian came back out into the
hallway, looking through the glass-fronted door. It was Nick.
Brian grinned. He hadn’t seen Nick for ages and ages. After the last tour,
which had ended two weeks ago, all the boys had been catching up with friends,
family and sleep. They hadn’t seen that much of each other – just enjoyed
some rare time off of work. Brian opened the door.
“Frack!”
“Frick!” replied Nick, pulling Brian into a manly hug. “How ya doing buddy?
Long time, no see!”
Brian grinned, messing up Nick’s newly-cut hair. “Yeah, yeah I’m cool. I
like the hair! It’s very … um … Ricky Martin!” he chuckled, as Nick
playfully whacked him around the head. He caught sight of Ben at the base of the
stairs.
“Ben!” Nick exclaimed, sitting beside him and shaking his little hand
vigorously. “How you doing little guy?”
Ben grinned wildly, feeling quite pleased to see Nick, as he hadn’t for so
long. “Ick!” he squealed, unintentionally mispronouncing Nick’s name. A
very bad move.
Nick raised an eyebrow in mock disgust. “Ick?!” he repeated. “No, no, NO!
You’re the icky one!” He began tickling Ben’s tummy, causing him to giggle
madly in happiness. Brian smiled, watching on and crossed to the front door –
looking briefly out as he did so. There was a removal van just pulling up,
rumbling up on the kerb. Brian shut the door, thinking deeply.
It seemed that the girl had moved in after all then…
