| A.F.I.- Morningstar (Interpretation): In Christian lore, Lucifer (a fallen angel, formerly the most beautiful angel in Heaven) is called the Morning Star. This is from two points of view, I believe: one is of someone who saw the Morning Star once, when he was dreaming, and the other is of Lucifer himself. I saw a star beneath the stairs, Glowing through the melting walls. This person saw the Morning Star, "beneath the stairs"- possibly a reference to Jacob's Ladder, which extended to Heaven. Beaneath the stairs probably means the world below- not Earth, but Hell. The Morning Star shone through the melting walls of this layer of reality. Who will be the first to begin their fall? Or will we become one? Who will be the first to fall, who will lose the final battle, God or Lucifer? Or will Lucifer be unmade in the end, returning to the essence that created him (which is God)? (Chorus) Am I the star beneath the stairs? Am I a ghost upon the stage? Am I your anything? Lucifer is asking "Am I just the ruler of your second palace (Hell, which he was given dominion over), or am I some performer upon your stage, playing my role, but never seen? Am I anything to you?" Lucifer was once the brightest star in Heaven, the most beloved of God. Because he would not bow to humans (upon seeing how imperfect we are comapred to God), he was cast out. A favorite child thrown away, who became resentful and jealous, is still asking if he means anything to his Creator. I saw a star beneath the stairs, Glowing bright before descent And in the morning there is nothing left but what's inside of me. This person witnessed Lucifer just at the descent, and when he awoke, he found himself with nothing but his own answers and questions. (Chorus x2) And I don't want to die tonight; Will you believe in me? And I don't want to fall into the light. Lucifer doesn't want to be unmade, and is asking someone to believe in him- whether this is a mortal, with a sinister motive, or if he is asking God to try and love him again, it is unclear. More likely, in the context of the song, he's asking for just a little approval for the role he plays in the Creation. However, he doesn't want to be brought back up. He is beginning to understand his place, that he helps bring balance- but it still will not stop him from wanting to take over and try his hand at playing 'God'. Will you wish upon? Will you walk upon me? I don't want to die tonight. Will you believe in me tonight? Again, the "you" is ambiguous as to whom he's referring to when he asks for someone to believe in him, but again, I believe he is talking to his Father, God, who created him. Lucifer speaks as a child, saying, "Will you accept me again, believe in me? Or will you just walk on me again? I don't want to die. So will you believe in me?" (Chorus x2) |
