John Horsfall Professional Pocket Billiards 1st place in Canadian Championships 2002 2nd place in Sands Regency Open in 2000 3rd Place in the U.S. Open in 1997 1st Place in the Sands Regency Open in 1996 He's only been playing 9-ball since 1995. One short year later, in his first tournament as a professional player in the United States, Canadian-born John Horsfall captured the coveted first place finish in the Sands Regency Open, defeating 220 other opponents. (He finished this tournament in second place in the spring of 2000). In 1997, Horsfall finished 3rd in the U.S Open, the highest finish ever for a Canadian. Now considered one of the top 15 players in the world and the first Canadian ever to win a professional tour event, it is hard to believe that 9-ball wasn't always John's first love. Despite such a promising beginning as a 9-ball player, John was interested in another type of game. He was going to become a professional tennis player. In fact, at age 16 he showed such promise as a tennis player that he received a scholarship to one of the best tennis schools in Canada. John's plan was to go to university on a tennis scholarship but instead he decided not to go to college and work in a pool room for six bucks an hour, much to the disappointment of his parents. He began playing snooker to help his tennis games. Horsfall was known to dispute his share of calls on the tennis court and thought that playing snooker, where you have to be composed and focused, would teach him the virtue of patience. That was the end of John's tennis career as he began spending upwards of six hours a day playing snooker because it was more relaxing, more social and he liked the people around the pool room. Horsfall began his career playing amateur snooker in Canada. He also played professional snooker in England. He started playing 9-Ball in 1995 and soon became an expert in both games. John makes winning sound easy but he has spent tens of thousands of hours practicing, and averages about two hours per day. Horsfall is a winner because of hard work and attitude. John plays between 10 and 15 major U.S. events a year and another 15 -20 smaller, regional weekend events in Alberta, British Columbia and Washington, Oregon. Horsfall has also been busy writing a book for the past two years along with a Vancouver writer. It is a how-to-guide for billiard players based on his advice and his own experience. He plans to publish it when he wins one of the major U.S. or world tournaments. John's latest passion is golf, which he discovered two years ago. He estimates he has played 200 games in the past two years and hits upwards of 300 balls every day at the driving range. He hopes to play in a few local tournaments this spring and says he would eventually like to play on the Senior Tour. Horsfall has a few short-term goals as well. He would like to win some pro events, play some more snooker tournaments and improve his golf game. He also hopes to play the Americas Tour Snooker Championship in Montreal next March. Whatever he does, John will be doing it with his usual 110% dedication.
