The American Revolution was what gave the Americans independence. However, the revolution could have very well failed at many points in its history. Many powers, notably France, gave the Americans support. It is because of this that the US won the American Revolution. However, it is entirely possible that this support could have never existed.

Emperor Louis XVI heard about a revolution in British North America. He contemplated supporting the Americans, but his advisors convinced him that these "upstarts" were bound to fail. He decided not to support them and, although he would be overthrown eventually, the Thirteen Colonies remained British.
