Just like human children, young ferrets like stories told to them at bedtime. Since Skeezix was a very young ferret, not even a year old, he liked for the other two to tell him stories.
Nippy was the story teller. Skeezix liked her stories the best. They were usually about things that she and Fizzy did when they were his age. Fizzy liked them too because she got to laugh at all the silly things they did when they were young. At heart, she and Nippy were still as young as Skeezix, but they had calmed down since then and didn't do most of this stuff. They did find new silly stuff to do, though.
Tonight's story was about the big heist that Nippy and Fizzy pulled one day. Ferrets are notorious for "stashing" things. Sometimes, though, what you take is so big that you need help and a well thought out plan.
"When we were about six months old, maybe a little older, we got into taking things and hiding them from mom and dad." Nippy had a great memory that made her the best storyteller. "We started out small, like with an ink pen, but we wanted to take somthing bigger.
First we wanted to see how mom and dad would handle our stashing phase. Every time we took somehting, they thought it was really funny and would laugh. If we took something bigger, they laughed more. If it was something smaller, they chuckled and thought it was just cute. We wanted something big to take, but weren't sure what.
Then one day it hit me. Dad plays the guitar. Do you remember the cloth case that he has?" She looked at Skeezix, wondering if he had seen it yet. He nodded and she continued.
"Well, we decided to take that, but we had to work our way up to it. You know how big that thing is. It's almost as big as our cage!
So, we started practicing again with the pens and pencils. Then we moved up to shorts. Next, was a plastic bottle that was empty. These were easy to grab because of the shape. We knew that the guitar case would not be so easy.
One day I decided to take a tennis shoe. Mom and dad thought that was great. It was kind of heavy and awkward, but that's what made it good practice."
Fizzy decided to jump in here. "Remember that house shoe I took that was big and fuzzy? It wasn't very heavy, but I couldn't get a good grip on it."
"Yes," said Nippy. "I remember. You also decided to take a glass bottle one day, but ended up rolling it under the bed instead of carrying it. Those are hard to work with. I still can't carry one."
Skeezix laughed. He had seen the green glass bottles they were talking about. He had tipped one over once, but that was about it. They were neat bottles that read "A-L-E-8-1." Mom and dad drank them often. H had tried it once, but it fizzed up his nose and he didn't like that. Mom and dad had referred to it as a soft drink, but those fizzies didn't seem too soft to him.
Nippy continued with her story.
"Finally, the perfect opportunity came to stash the guitar case. It was laying close to the bed on the floor. I grabbed one end of it with my teeth and Fizzy grapped the other end. It seemed heavier than I thought it should be, but I didn't think anything of it. After all, it was bigger than the both of us.
We started pulling with all our might, making sure mom and dad were watching. The case started moving. Just as we had thought, mom and dad started laughing hysterically. Unfortunately, they took it be we could get it all the way under the bed."
Fizzy interrupted again. "Remember what they said about it though? Tell him why it was so heavy!"
"I was getting to that," said Nippy. "It turns out that the reason it was so heavy was because it was more than just the case. The guitar was in there too. Mom and dad were really impressed. Fizzy and I were worn out because of the weight. Our plan worked, though. We did get to stash the guitar case."
"So what are you going to stash next?" Skeezix wanted to be in on the next one.
"I don't know." Nippy laughed. "But I am sure with you helping us pull, it could be something really big. Maybe we could even move the cage!" With that the three roared with laughter. Imagine, three little ferrets moving a four-foot tall wire cage. That would be impossible.
Or would it? |
