Self-harm is when someone deliberately hurts or injures themselves. This may include (but are not limited to) things such as cutting, burning, scratching, punching or hitting themselves and swallowing harmful substances.
Some people may self harm on a regular basis, while others may do it only occasionally. Self harm is not an attempt at suicide, or a means of seeking attention. Many people who do it are ashamed of it, and scared of what other people may think of them for doing it.
It is very common, particularly among girls and young women. The reasons for doing it are varied, and there is no specific "cure". As with eating disorders, different methods work for different people.
Here I have included some links to other websites where you can find more information on self harm, and help and support if you feel you are ready to try and stop. Please note that the "resources" pages also include books and films on self harm, and other mental health issues.
