His son Lewis told this story: "About twenty bushwackers, all on horseback, rode up under a big tree with ropes in hand ready to hang Henry B. They asked if he had any last words to say. He answered that he had something to tell the leader in private. At this they rode their horses a few paces away from the group and stopped to talk. Henry figured that his horse could outrun the leader's horse and also the rest of them if he had a little lead on them. So he spurred his horse and took off. He did outrun them all but his horse was winded after the race. He abandonded the horse in the woods and ran a long way on foot. He then found his way back from Lake County to Lauderdale County weeks later. He stayed hidden in his Aunt Winney Haynes' barn for about three weeks. They gave him food, He then left left the county and went to Arkansas and then to Texas. He had numerous descendants who live in California, Oklahoma, and Boise, Idaho. One of his grandsons [from Boise, Idaho] is a graduate of West Point Military Academy.
