Guardian Forces in Final Fantasy VIII
From Final Fantasy II to Final Fantasy VII, summoned creatures have always been there to lend a helping hand in the heat of a battle. Final Fantasy VIII has pushed the role of summoned creatures even further with the introduction of Guardian Forces. They're still the same powerful creatures you've come to know and love, and you'll see a lot of familiar faces, but now their role is even greater from that of in the past.
GFs will grow throughout the game in a way very similar to your character. Just as your character gains experience and go up levels, so do the GFs. But the experience for the GF gets divided depending on how many a character has junctioned to him/herself. But one thing the GF also learn are ability points (AP), which enable them to learn new abilities like HP+20% and Str Bonus. Unlike experience and how it splits, a full amount of the AP is given to every GF. When new abilities are learned, the AP will automatically jump over to the next unlearned ability. If you want to make room, try using "Amnesia Greens" to forget abilities and add new, better ones. A GF can only learn 22 abilities.
GFs are a lot like pets, only for the fact that they respond to your orders depending on how much they like you. This is called their Compatibility. Never look over this when junctioning GFs to characters, whereas a low compatibility is a mark for its death because it takes your place and "guards" you when you summon it. So a low GF will take in a ton of damage whereas a GF with high compatibility will be there in a flash. Use your GFs in battle and use certain items to boost their compatibliity a bit.
