| DON- Early twenties, tenor voice. A pseudo-intellectual hipster-type, Don is a would-be singer/songwriter who has yet to be motivated enough to finish his many artistic ideas. A passionate spark, yet complacent and irresponsible. He finds himself in a pallel dimension, without remembering much about himself or why he's even there, except that he's lost something very valuable. CARLOS- Tenor/Barotone. Hispanic, mid fifties (ages to seventy-two.) Although looking more like a hispanic school teacher, he is a confident sage, worn with experience. He is actually Carlos Casteneda: author, anthropologist, and (to some) new-age guru. Appearing mysteriously, he chooses Don to be his last apprentice. FEAR- A dance ensemble of three (one male, two females.) Looking somewhat like traditional phantoms (wearing dark-hooded robes and such) they are attracted to any being projecting a strong wave of anxiety. The watchdogs of non-ordinary, they expel any being that does not belong. DON'S SOUL- (movement based role.) A wispy ghost-like figure, she is the spiritual extention of Don as well as the sum total of his knowledge. DISTRACTION- Soprano, extremely hyperactive. Taking the form of a harlequin, she represents Don's own tendency to wander and latch on to tanjents of curiousness. Distraction ends up being his reluctant guide. PIPER- Tenor/Baritone. Dressed like a gypsy, he is the bringer of mental sleep. Piper attempts to use Don's lack of motivation to cause him to get lost in his realm of sleep. Entrancing him with the hypnotic images he projects with his flute, his melody causes him to lose memories. OSO- Tenor/Baritone. He is the representation of all of the problems that Don has run away from. Taking the form of a humanoid bear, his demeanor is that of a big bully. Using the power of Don's guilty conscience, he tries to imprison him an actual cage built from his own cowardice. VENUS- Mezzo-Soprano. (Plays from late teens to forties.) An ironic representation of Don's perfect woman, she appears in the form of three characters: the innocent virginesk Jenni, the mother-like matriarch Harriet, and the kinky dominatrix The Goddess. Visited by each one seperately, Don, is fooled into thinking they are all different women. PERVERSION- Tenor/Baritone. Basically the "Fetish MC" of the sex realm that is the Goddess' domain. He seeks to lure and tempt, as he can only derive energy from the ecstasy experienced by other beings. OVERLORD OF ADDICTION- Tenor/Baritone. The slave-driving warden of all the lost souls that are bound by their various addictions. Looking somewhat like an over-decorated prison guard, he guards a wall that denies entrance into the "Superunknown :a place deep within non-ordinary reality that provides beings with souls a source of positive energy to reach their full potential. DON'S ALLY- (movement based role.) A gold-skinned dance ensemble of two (male and female) who inhabit the superunknown and are tied especially to Don. They exist to bestow him with the power and clarity he needs once he has overcome the trials and tribulations of reaching the superunknown. EL DIABLO- Baritone. A dark, hulking beast with several dark red streaks in his black skin, as if relentlessly slashed. He also has spiky appendages on his arms and shoulders, while wearing a fiery red mask. Seen as the embodiment of evil, he derives strength from hatred and aggression. Having no ethics or particular idiom, he is not bound by any particular methods or means to destroy his enemies or achieve his mysterious ends. El Diablo, however, is not really a being of non-ordinary reality. He is actually Carlos' evil side. IMAGES FROM DON'S LIFE- These appear when Don is Oso's prisioner. They are a part of the guilty conscience Don projects and form a mock jury to decide whether or not he is to be set free. They are: DON'S MOTHER, his ROOMMATE, and a BILL COLLECTOR. SKELETONS IN DON'S CLOSET- A dance ensemble of three skeleton-like figures that are Oso's minions of guilt. FETISHISTS- A dance ensemble of three, that along with Perversion are inhabitants of the sex realm. They wear various styles of fetish garb, existing to tempt any being they come across. BRICKLAYERS- Movement-based part that portrays a few of the lost souls trapped in the realm of the addicted. GUARDS- Two (non-speaking) prison guards that are the Overlord of Addiction's enforcers who watch over the bricklayers. SHADOWS- Various (non-speaking) minions of the beings of non-ordinary reality. |
