The Meaning Behind Gemstones and Their Healing Properties
Gems are often thought of as having great metaphysical properties. Whether this is a purely psychological phenomena or something more what is evident is this - use of certain gems are believed to instill certain feelings within the wearer. Below I have listed short explanations of the commonly believed properties of these stones. The stones are listed alphabetically.
Amazonite
Lore: This stone is named after the Amazon River and represents the planet Uranus and the Fifth Chakra, the throat. It balances masculine and feminine energies and promotes kindness and practicality.
Metaphysical: Aids in balancing emotions, dissolving sadness, and encouraging practicality and kindness.
Healing: Aids with cramps, childbirth, calming nerves, and heartache due to grief. Also promotes physical stamina.
Amber
Lore: Amber is not actually a stone, but fossilized tree sap. It represents the Third Chakra, the solar plexus. In ancient times amber was carried by travelers for protection, and in Asia amber was regarded as the “soul of the tiger”.
Metaphysical: Promotes good luck, success, and sunny disposition as well as dissolving opposition against you.
Healing: Aids with joint problems, teething pain in babies, and stomach, spleen, and kidney complaints.
Aventurine (Green)
Lore: This stone is a member of the quartz family and represents the Fourth Chakra, the heart. Aventurine can occur in many colors, but most commonly green.
Metaphysical: Considered extremely lucky for things involving prosperity and wealth.
Healing: Aids with nearsightedness and mood stabilization for distraught emotions.
Fluorite
Lore: This stone represents the Crown Chakra. Ranges in color between green and purple and mixtures thereof. It is said to absorb and neutralize negative vibrations as well as increasing one’s receptiveness to the vibrations of other stones.
Metaphysical: Aids in concentration, decision making, and analytical ability. Also increases psychic awareness and clairvoyant ability. Commonly worn when meditating to promote openness to vibrations.
Healing: Aids with maintaining and encouraging good health, ulcers, stimulating cell regeneration, and improving joint ailments.
Garnet
Lore: This stone represents the planet Mars and also the First Chakra, the base of the spine. Garnet is considered useful in stimulating and promoting success in business ventures.
Metaphysical: Aids in promoting self esteem, popularity, constancy in friendship, love and compassion, spiritual awareness and security, and protection when traveling. Commonly worn against the head when meditating on past lives.
Healing: Aids with purification of the thyroid and spleen, revitalization of energy and stamina, and increase in sex drive. Also releases panic, worry, fear, and anxiety.
Lapis Lazuli
Lore: This stone is linked to the planets Saturn and Venus, as well as being representative of the Fifth Chakra, the throat. It is said that Lapis was a symbol of truth to the ancient Egyptians. Considered extremely powerful – handle this stone with care.
Metaphysical: Aids in bringing matters clearly to mind when meditating, revealing inner truths, encouraging self awareness, and bestowing wisdom and honesty.
Healing: Aids with opening the chakra centers and cleansing the body.
Malachite
Lore: This stone is representative of the planet Jupiter and the Fourth Chakra, the heart. Malachite has long been used in amulets worn for protection against the evil eye. Believed to be a strong protector of children.
Metaphysical: Protects from accidents and undesirable business associations. It also promotes balance in relationships. Stresses the duel nature of personality and reflects the wearers inner feelings. Believed to dispel nightmares when kept in the bedroom.
Healing: This particularly stone should not be used for physical healing. Amplifies the inner feelings of the wearer.
Moonstone
Lore: This stone is linked to the Moon. It is said that if you give your lover a moonstone when the moon is full, you will always have passion in your relationship. Is considered most powerful during the full moon, and is the stone of the goddess Artemis (Diana).
Metaphysical: Brings good fortune, promotes inspiration, assists in fortune telling and clairvoyance, enhances intuition, and brings success in love and business. Considered good luck in general. Excellent for use in meditation to understand yourself.
Healing: Aids with functioning of the pineal gland, balancing hormone cycles with nature’s rhythm, and promoting inner strength.
Onyx
Lore: This stone is linked to the planet Saturn. This stone is used for both separation and protection from negative energies within yourself and directed at you by others. Thought to be useful in ending bad relationships. Thought to create psychic “invisibility” and therefore, protection.
Metaphysical: Aids in defending against negativity, fortifying self confidence and responsibility, and encouraging healthy egotism.
Healing: Considered useful in sharpening your senses and aiding in the release of grief.
Peridot
Lore: This stone is connected to the planets Mercury and Venus. Believed to be a stone of spring time, a gift from Mother Nature. It was said in ancient times that to dream of Peridot foretold of impending danger. Considered to be useful only to very clear-minded or spiritual people.
Metaphysical: Protects against negative emotions and soothes the soul.
Healing: Aids with healing of the gall bladder and liver.
Quartz
Lore: This stone is related to the planet Venus and is one of the most common elements found within the Earth – representing all Chakras combined. Although common, it is an extremely powerful stone and is very useful for amplifying the vibrations of other stones. Ancient people believed that very clear forms of quartz were ice crystals that would not melt.
Metaphysical: Channels energy both in and out of the body. Useful for meditation, or for clearing out bad energy. Considered to increase telepathic and clairvoyant ability.
Healing: Aids with memory improvement, fortifying the nerves, reducing fever, alleviating pain, swelling, and nausea.
Quarts (Rose)
Lore: This stone represents romantic and compassionate love, and balances the Heart and Throat Chakras. It is said to give the wearer a strong sense of self-worth, and therefore feelings of being worthy of love. Also related to marriage and universal love.
Metaphysical: Offers feelings of self-worth and inner peace. Aids in all matters of love and relationships. Keeps the fire in relationships.
Healing: Said to help fade wrinkles and keep skin young when placed in the water you wash your face with. Promotes fertility.
Sodalite
Lore: This stone is considered to promote inner peace and is considered very lucky for writers. Often confused with Lapis Lazuli… Also thought to deepen meditation and unite logic with intuition.
Metaphysical: Promotes ease of communication and confidence in speaking, inner peace, and harmonizing the conscious and subconscious mind.
Healing: Promotes endurance for athletics, as well as being associated with the thyroid. Said to aid in weight loss.
