On Saturday morning last, the news of the sudden death of Dr H Y Webb saddened all hearts in our town. He had passed the three score and ten - still it was a severe shock. But two days before he was seen on our streets, saluting friends in his hearty manner, bidding fair, as all thought, to last many days yet. Alas, that we to whom he has been friend, physician, mentor, should sustain so great a loss. But joy and triumph and glory to him who has gone to a full reward, for his upright walk, for his Godly conversation, his long life of consistent piety, and tenderest Christian charity. Dr Webb has gone in and out of nearly every household in town as friend and physician, and he has borne with him the love, esteem and admiration of all. His tender heart so full of mercy forbade him ever to slight the poor or suffering in body or mind when called upon to minister to their needs or pains. That mercy he hoped for was freely given to all to the full extent of his ability.

A lady of gentle dignity, calm unruffled temperament, deeply earnest and true, modest, shy, and very reserved. So undemonstrative that it was proverbial in the family. She was never seen to voluntarily caress one of her children except when they were babies in her arms. So proud she never cared for display, dress or ornament; though she had beautiful jewelry. She never wore a piece of it. Extremely reticent and moderate in expressing herself, never using superlatives. An earnest Christian. Deep tender abiding love, and withal a most unselfish person. So considerate of others, her home was called "Liberty Hall". Serene and peaceful, her home was a veritable "City of Refuge".

Henry and Elizabeth had the following children:

546. James Davis WEBB (John, Charles, Isaac, Giles, John William, Giles, Richard, William Micajah, Alexander, Alexander, Henry Alexander, John Alexander, John Alexander, William, John, Geoffrey, Henry) was born on Sep 11 1861 in Butler County, Alabama. He died on Sep 12 1944 in Wichita Falls, Wichita County, Texas and was buried on Sep 15 1944 in Brownfield, Terry County, Texas.

James Davis Webb was born in Alabama but little else is known about his childhood before arriving in Texas. He married Mary Araminta Farnsworth whose family can be traced back to the Revolutionary War when her ancestor, Henry Farnsworth, was a lieutenant in the Revolutionary Army of Virginia. James Davis "Jim" and Mary Araminta "Minta" had 4 children who lived past infancy: Mary Lillian born November 18, 1891 and died February 6, 1925 at the age of 33; Elma Davis born July 12, 1893 and died May 10, 1953 at the age of 60; Oran Ewart born August 26, 1897 and died April 4, 1948 at the age of 50; and Alton born October 23, 1904 and died August 21, 1983 at the age of 78. Lillian died of pneumonia during the influenza epidemic of 1925. The members of the family attended her funeral, some traveling by horse-drawn buggy. Right after the funeral Minta became ill and quickly succumbed to the flu, also, dying at the age of 53. The family stayed and attended her funeral which was one week after Lillian's. Minta and her daughter, Lillian are buried in the old Terry county cemetery at Brownfield with a large tombstone heading both graves. Nearly 20 years later when Jim died, he was buried beside them with a tombstone fashioned to match theirs. The first thing you see when you enter the cemetery are the two large "WEBB" tombstones beside the road. Jim Webb and his father-in-law, George Washington Farnsworth were evidently good friends and sometimes business partners. They purchased land together and, at one time, lived in Dilley, Texas. Jim bought and sold several pieces of land both in Floyd County and other areas where he lived. His wife purchased some land in her name, too. The deed records show numerous transactions by the family. Possibly they bought and sold land as a way of making money.

The Webb family came to the Plains in the 1890s from Coolidge in Limestone County. They first settled in Hale County then in Floyd County where at one time they owned four sections of land. The Lockview Farm is located on part of the land the Webb family once owned. The family moved to Dilley in Frio County in 1908, later settling at Brownfield in Terry County. Family members have said that Jim always seemed to have some money.

The Webb men were characterized by one family member as being a little dull but devoted to their families. Jim Webb tended to be cool and not overly affectionate but he was very fair-minded. His favorites seemed to be the children of Alton and Elma. Oran's family lived too far away to ever be very close to their grandfather. The only thing his grandson, Jim Bob, remembers about his Grandfather Webb is him telling their father not to let the children eat chocolate because it was bad for them. Four years after Minta's death, Jim Webb married a second time to Grace Youree. Her name is spelled different ways in various family documents, but the tombstone spells it "YOUREE". Billy Rex says he remembers "Grandma Grace" as the only grandmother he knew since Minta died before he was born. When Grace died, Jim went to her sons by her first marriage (to J D Youree) and gave them half of whatever he had acquired during his marriage to their mother.

James Davis (Jim) Webb a former resident of Floyd County died September 12, 1944 and was buried at Brownfield, Texas Friday morning beside the grave of his first wife.

During his years of land speculation, Jim Webb had bought some land in Yoakum County, Texas. He purchased nine sections of land by deed dated May 14, 1906 from P S Roberts and wife Alma, for $2.50 per acre. The Roberts had acquired the land from some people named Johnson in September 1903, and the Johnsons had acquired it by paying the taxes owed on it, getting it from the State who had originally granted it to John H Gibson in return for surveying it. One of the sections went to Alton and a portion of another section purchased by the Farnsworths became a part of J D Webb's land, making it eight and one-half sections. Family members still maintain some ownership interest in this land today.

When the hard winters were too much, the Webbs moved from Floyd County to Yoakum County to farm this land and they thought it was a dream come true. It was a good year, the crops were lush and they were happy. But it was only a dream. It turned out that this was an unusual year and, after that they struggled to survive in the harsh terrain.

Minta died and Jim and Alton moved to Post, Texas to farm. Jim tried and tried to sell the sections of land. He was able to sell some of the surface land but kept part of the mineral rights which he later deeded to his sons. Each received certain portions of the sections, divided in such a way that one son got two thirds of certain sections and one third of others. Fortunately it was written down since it was rather complicated, to say the least. Jim farmed in Post to pay the taxes on the land. Some of the surface land was kept in the family. Elma farmed on one section, No. 425, and that remains the "family farm" in his son's name (Billy Rex).

After having survived two wives, J D "Jim" Webb came to his final years. He became mentally feeble and stayed in the hospital at Brownfield. However, he began to wander into other rooms and the hospital finally told the family they could no longer keep him. Elma and Lena brought him into their home to care for him. He would only allow Lena to give him his medication. He became difficult and would do such things as wander outside at night. Once he fell into the cistern and Elma had to get him out, clean him up and get him back to bed. So, Elma and Alton decided he needed to be put into a home and they chose one in Wichita Falls. Two months after he went into the nursing home, he died. Alton remarked that if he had known his father was going to die so soon, he would never have put him in the home. He died at the age of 83 years - just one day after his birthday.

And he never knew the legacy he left his descendants. In 1951 oil was discovered in the area where he had purchased those nine sections of land in Yoakum County. Although none of the wells were huge producers, some have steadily pumped oil for over forty years. Although no one got "rich", the oil gave the children and grandchildren and their spouses a comfortable life. It took care of Oran's widow so she did not have to work, it put the grandchildren through college and provided nice homes and cars for everyone.

In the Dilley local news column of the Dilley Atmosphere, which was the Dilley, Texas newspaper published on November 5, 1913 there was this line: "The following prominent Dilley citizens attended the State Fair in Dallas last week: J E J Pouncey, C L Busby, J D Webb and L C Wright. Mr Wright purchased a pair of very fine registered Poland China pigs while there, which he will add to his already very fine herd".

James married (1) Mary Araminta FARNSWORTH, daughter of George Washington FARNSWORTH and Mary Ann ALDRIDGE, on Jan 14 1890 in Limestone County, Texas. Mary was born on Sep 8 1871 in Moscow, Hickman County, Kentucky. She died on Feb 14 1925 in Brownfield, Terry County, Texas and was buried in Feb 1925 in Brownfield, Terry County, Texas.

An article published on November 5, 1913 in the Dilley Atmosphere, which was the Dilley, Texas newspaper reported on a meeting of the "Parents and Teachers Club". A report on the Farm and Home Economy was made by Mrs Webb.

James and Mary had the following children:

This letter was received from J W Baughman following the funeral of Lillian Webb. "I am addressing this letter to Alton so that the family will get it. Ever since I met you good people I have appreciated you and now I feel like writing you a few lines since your recent sorrow. I have never been so forcibly impressed with a funeral ceremony as I witnessed at the funeral of Miss Lillian there Saturday. I thought it was pretty enough and impressive at the grave but when it ended in your own grief-stricken home with "In the Sweet Bye and Bye" my heart overflowed with gratitude for the good work of those brave and loyal Klanswomen. It was the prettiest ceremony I ever saw. I feel sure it had a wonderful effect on all that witnessed it. Miss Lillian had many friends there who appreciated her. Here was a life in which there was no guile. Brother Webb, you must bear up under this and don't harbor any malice toward that bunch that talk before they think. I see a new day approaching for the better element there. That Klan ceremony will be an eye-opener. May God bless you good people and when we have an oppurtunity we are coming to see you."
