DEATH: Beaver Dam Argus, Nov. 20, 1884 Scouton_In this city Monday Nov. 17th, 1884 of
paralysis. Mrs. Mary Scouton, aged 84 years. The maiden name of Mrs. Scouton was Mary
Baker. She was
born in Beekman, Clinton Co., N.Y., April 8th,1800. When twenty years of age she married
Chas. Webb. Three children were born of this marriage, Mary Ann, now Mrs. C. M. Smith,
Chas. Douglas,
and William Pitt: all these are now residents of this city. Mr. Webb died when these
children were quite young and in 1839 his widow married Mr. Luther Gilson with whom she
removed to Gilson Mills
in Oswego Co., New York. Luther Gilson, now of Milwaukee, was born there. In1840 Mrs.
Gilson was again left a widow and in 1849 she married David Scouton and in 1850 they
removed to Lowell in
this county where Mr. Scouton died a few years later. After this event, Mrs. Scouton
resided with her son Luther Gilson, first in Lowell, then for a few years in this city and
latterly in Milwaukee. For a few months past she has lived with Mr. C. D. Webb's family in
this city and died at their house. About a year ago she had a stroke of paralysis from
which she never recovered. Until the time of this stroke Mrs. Scouton had been a woman of
remarkable physical vigor and activity, always ready to make any sacrifice of time, labor
and comfort for her family. She was a great reader and was especially fond of reading her
Bible. This fondness for reading and a naturally good mind, made her a woman of much more
than ordinary intelligence. Through her life she was remarkable for her strong love of
home and in the homes of her children she will be graciously and lovingly remembered. The
funeral took place
yesterday at the house of C. D. Webb and the burial was in Grove Prairie Cemetery in the
town of Lowell, where Mr. Scouton was buried [Beaver Dam Argus, Oct. 1, 1859].

Virginia. He died in 1811 in Hancock County, Georgia.
Francis father died when he was 14 and sometime thereafter he took the notion to become a
sailor. He actually had his chest put on board a vessel, when the entreaties of his mother
brought him home again. When he was 16 he left home and went on board a privately armed
vessel. This was about the beginning of the Revolutionary War. During the first battle,
with only two exceptions, everyone on their craft was either killed or wounded. Francis
was shot in the ankle which caused one of his legs to be shorter than the other. Even
though they were disabled they managed to save their vessel. For his gallantry, he
received the appointment of midshipman in the Virginia Navy and was stationed on board the
ship "Dragon", where he served the principal part of the Revolutionary War.
After the war he married Frances Belfield Walker, and in 1810 relocated to Hancock County,
Georgia. He and Frances had eight children.

One of the first sessions of the Alabama Territorial court was held in a log cabin on the
site of the present city of Birmingham, according to histories of the state, Judge Henry
Young Webb, native of Granville County, North Carolina, born August 4, 1784, was presiding
judge. According to the records the log cabin was located at Neighbors Crossroads, in the
portion of Blount County subsequently incorporated into Jefferson County. Judge Webb
graduated at the University of North Carolina, read law and was admitted to the bar at
Lincolntown, North Carolina; represented his county in the North Carolina legislature; was
appointed territorial judge for Alabama in 1818 by President Monroe; located in Perry
County, but soon thereafter moved to Greene County; was elected one of the first judges of
the Circuit Court at the first session of the Alabama legislature in 1819, and continued
in office until his death in 1823. When he came to Alabama the population was small and
scattered. Often the court sessions were held in private homes as there were no
courthouses or other public buildings available in many places. Jefferson County had not
been organized, and there were only two or three settlements within its present
boundaries. Indians were still here and remained in nearby sections for more than a decade
afterward. Judge Webb and Elizabeth Forney of Lincolntown, North Carolina were married on
December 29, 1812 and had three sons and two daughters.
Henry married Elizabeth FORNEY on Dec 29 1812 in Mount Welcome, Lincoln County, North
Carolina. Elizabeth was born on Mar 31 1795 in Mount Welcome, Lincoln County, North

The following letter was penned by Levi Webb, to his master Col James D Webb. The father
of Levi was Charles Webb, the body servant of Henry Y Webb of Hillsboro, N C. Charles was
given by Judge Webb to his eldest son, Major W P Webb of Eutaw, AL. Charles lived to be
quite old and was highly esteemed. He reared his son Levi carefully and the latter earned
for himself the goodwill of all who knew him. Levi was devoted to his master Col Webb as
the following will show. While his master was at the front Levi filled a place of trust
and responsibility - which he filled well. "Greensboro, June 15, 1861 - My dear
Master and Friend, I seat myself at my bench to hurriedly write you a few lines by Mr
Allen Jones. I went up to his house to see him and had a talk with him about you. He told
me that you were well and doing well and I was glad to hear it. I hope you will continue
to do well. If you put your trust in the Lord, you will do well and I hope that you do. I
pray for you daily, that you may come home in good health and in honor. Everything is
going straight about the home as far as I can see. Josh is cutting and hauling wood and
selling it at 1.25 a load; that is what Mr Owen told him to ask. Your horses are looking
fine and everything about home is well, and all send love to you and hope that the Lord
will bless you and take care of you. I heard from Miss Jessie the other day and she and
the children are well. My family are well and send their love to you. Take good care of
yourself Master. It is my daily prayer that the Lord will bless you and return you home.
Your humble servant, Levi Webb." Levi died a few months after his master in 1863.
James Daniel Webb was the second son of Judge Henry Young Webb and Elizabeth Forney Webb
and was born on February 22, 1818. He became a lawyer, was a distinguished son of Alabama,
and fought and died for the Confederate Cause. He was mortally wounded while in command of
the 51st Alabama Regiment of Cavalry in the battle of New Church, near Elk River. Col Webb
died July 2, 1863 - just after he had been promoted to the rank of Brigadier General, and
was buried at Winchester, Tennessee.

Levi married Elizabeth ROWELL.
They had the following children:

435. John WEBB (Charles, Isaac, Giles, John William, Giles, Richard, William Micajah,
Alexander, Alexander, Henry Alexander, John Alexander, John Alexander, William, John,
Geoffrey, Henry) was born in 1797 in Washington County, Georgia. He died on Dec 16 1862 in
Butler County, Alabama and was buried in 1862 in Butler County, Alabama.
John Webb was born in Washington County, Georgia about 1797. He married Sarah A L (last
name unknown). We think that her maiden name might have been Chivers but cannot verify
this. The 1850 census shows a woman named Lydia Chivers, age 82, living with John and
Sarah. We think that she may be Sarah's mother. John and Sarah Webb had seven children.
The first three were born in Washington County, Georgia, the fourth is listed as being
born in Alabama in 1836 and the last three were born in Muscogee County, Georgia. And then
something happened to cause John Webb to leave his first family, move to Alabama and marry
another person with whom he had three sons. In the family there is a small pistol, ca
1835. It has never been fired. The story is that John Webb purchased the pistol to shoot
someone, but rather than commit murder, he moved away. Although the pistol was passed down
to the first born son by his second wife, the story itself remains a mystery. We do not
know why he needed to consider committing murder. Since the family was otherwise highly
esteemed, honest and respectable, it is possible that John Webb was so traumatized by the
occurence, he didn't want to talk about it. He married Apalany Kennedy Chandler sometime
between 1850 and 1854, probably 1852 or 1853. She had been married before and brought her
four children by her first husband to the marriage with John Webb. John and Apalany had
three sons, the lastborn being the grandfather of James Robert Webb. James Davis Webb, the
lastborn son was only sixteen months old when his father died, so he never really knew
him. This may be the reason that so little is known in James Davis' family about his
parents, especially his father. When John died, he left a will which Apalany probated. The
document specifically lists only his children by Apalany as his heirs (in the event of her
death). Three of the children of the first marriage are listed by Apalany in the probate
papers. This enabled us to locate the family in the 1850 and 1860 census. We assume that
Apalany knew only the names of the three older children, therefore did not list all the
others in the document.
John and Apalany purchased land in Butler County, Alabama where they engaged in farming.
The land was near the present town of Rutledge, Alabama, which became a part of Crenshaw
County in 1867, but was in Butler County at the time that John was alive. In 1860,
Apalany's oldest daughter, Sarah Jane Chandler, was married in a wedding ceremony "at
Mr. John Webb's", according to the marriage certificate. The groom was the son of a
neighbor, John J Combs. The 1860 census shows the two families living close to each other.
Sarah's husband enlisted in the Alabama Volunteers but evidently died of sickness instead
of being killed in battle. The 1870 census shows Sarah living with Apalany, both now
widowed, and each with a nine-year-old child. Sarah has a daughter, Sarah, age nine, and
Apalany has a son, James Davis, age nine. After John's death, Apalany continued to live on
their property. She paid the taxes, but we can imagine that life was hard since this was
the time of the Civil War. Descendants of John Risby Webb say that the Union soldiers
stole Apalany's horses and cattle among other things.
More of the Chandler daughters married: Louisa married Thomas Ganey, son of another
neighbor family who later migrated to Texas and lived in Limestone County near the rest of
the Webb family when they, too, migrated to Texas. Martha Ann married W D Frazier who
served in the Alabama Volunteers, Company A, Hillard's Legion, an artillery battalion.
They also migrated to Limestone County as did William Chandler, Apalany's youngest by her
first husband.
William married Lenore, maiden name not known. All of these Chandler children are buried
in Limestone County along with their spouses and children.
About 1871, Apalany migrated to Texas, leaving a power of attorney authorizing William R
Houghton to act in her behalf in the sale of the Alabama property. Some of this Webb land
was sold to the Swanner family whose descendants still own it. In Limestone County, Texas,
the three sons born to John and Apalany grew up and married. John Risby married Ada Askew.
They had eleven children, seven of whom survived, and they remained in the area where John
Risby owned a store and also farmed. He was said to be a good swimmer and a generous man.
He never refused credit to a family who needed food and many of these credit accounts were
never paid. He was left-handed. The esteem that he felt for his mother was shown as he
named his first daughter Apalany. She died at the age of six days. He tried to get his
sons' wives to name their daughters Apalany but to no avail. They didn't consider it to be
a very attractive name. John Risby died at the age of 86 years. Evans Rutherford Webb
married Carrie M Thompson and moved to the Panhandle area of Texas. They raised six
children some of whom worked as mechanics in auto garages according to the 1910 census.
James Davis "Jim" Webb married Mary Araminta Farnsworth in Limestone County on
January 14, 1890. Her father, G W Farnsworth was a good friend of Jim's and they bought
and sold land together on several occasions. Jim was ten years older than Minta. They soon
moved to the Panhandle area where they lived in Floyd County, Texas. They also lived in
Frio County, Texas for a while and then moved to Yoakum County. Wherever they lived, Jim
bought parcels of land and sold them. Minta also bought some land in her name. They had
five children, four of whom lived to adulthood. Jim lived to be 83 years old.
We believe that Charles WEBB, b. 27 April 1756 in Richmond Virginia, is the father of John
WEBB, great grandfather of James Robert WEBB, Sr. There is no recorded proof of this but
we have come to this conclusion through a PREPONDERANCE OF EVIDENCE. Our John WEBB was
born in Washington County, Georgia in 1797, according to the 1850 and 1860 census records.
The Washington County, Georgia courthouse burned twice - once in 1855 and once in 1864
during the Civil War. This means that many records were forever lost. In 1995, we traveled
to the county to view the remaining records. We also visited with Mrs. Wiles of the
Washington County Historical Society, and we studied material at the Sandersville Library.
There is a family of WEBBs who moved to Washington County, Georgia. They are descendants
of the WEBB family from England and they descend from Richard WEBB who came, along with
his four brothers, to America about 1629. Marriage and birth records of this family
survive down to Isaac WEBB and his wife, Frances Barber WEBB, and show that Isaac had a
son, Charles WEBB, born 27 April 1756. Some of the sons of Isaac, including John and
Giles, came to Washington County, Georgia. Several documents for John and Giles remain to
show this. We find that our John WEBB was not a child of either John or Giles WEBB. In the
1820 Washington County census there is a Charles WEBB listed. He is probably the male in
the household who is listed in the "45 and over" age category. In his household
is one male listed as age "16-26". Our John WEBB would have been 23 years old at
that time and not married, yet. By 1830, our John WEBB had married his first wife, Sarah,
and we find him in Washington County's 1830 census with a female age "20-30"
(this would fit Sarah, born about 1807) and a male age "30-40" (John would have
been 33). There is no Charles WEBB in this 1830 census. Charles, born 1756, would have
been 74 years old by then and most probably was deceased. John WEBB had two sons that we
know of by his first wife...Enoch and James Ross. Both of them married but only James had
any children. James named his first son, Charles. And the name Charles continues in the
descendants of that family. We have searched census and other records to find the ancestry
of John WEBB. We found nothing to indicate there is any other father than this Charles
WEBB. Likewise, there is not another family for this Charles WEBB to negate his being
John's father. Therefore, from our research and work, we believe that Charles WEBB, son of
Isaac WEBB, grandson of Giles WEBB and Elizabeth Spann WEBB, is the father of John WEBB,
ancestor of James Robert WEBB, Sr.
John married (1) Sarah A L CHIVERS about 1823. The marriage ended in divorce. Sarah was

4, 1862 at Knoxville, Georgia for 3 yrs. He was wounded in the left shoulder at Seven Days
fight near Richmond, Virginia, June, 1862. He was captured on July 5, 1863 at South
Mountain, Maryland and spent one and one-half years at Fort Delaware, the Union Prison in
Delaware. He was released on February 18, 1865. Rank - 3rd Corporal. He was buried at a
cemetery three and one-half miles east of Upatoie, Muscogee Co, Georgia. This cemetery was
washed away by a flood about 1990. He lived to the age of 96 years.
