Bristlecone Pines
09-20-09 White Mountains, CA

The Bristlecone pines in California's Inyo/White mountains northeast of Bishop, CA survive under incredibly harsh conditions.  They grow in areas usually considered to be above the timber line - 10,000 to 12,000 feet in elevation under alpine desert conditions - and they tenaciously cling to life even when growing out of a thin soil that is mostly broken shale and dolomite.  In fact when the harsh winds or the slow decay from a tree's roots losing water for too long causes that tree to topple, new branches will grow if even a thin strip of living tissue connects to a good root.  Many of the mature trees are half alive and half dead, with green needles and new young pine cones interwoven with bare clawlike branches

The ancient Bristlecone pines are the oldest living things on earth, with some of the oldest specimens more than 4,700 years old.  They exhibit a stark reminder of the tenacity of life in the face of adversity.

10-09-09: Working on setting up this new Photo page is proving more time consuming than I thought.  I'm having to track down a bunch of older photos and basically build the pages in reverse.   The newest images are up in the gallery, but I still have to create pages for anything shot from Jan 2008 to July 2009.

The domain switch happens in about 2 weeks, though, so I want to have as much done as possible before then.
