Bringing Yoga in the Classroom

Workshops for elementary school teachers.

In our rapidly changing world, children (like adults) benefit in many ways from the practice of yoga.

Concentration, self esteem, balance, strength and flexibility (physically and mentally) can all be improved through learning yoga techniques.

Children and adults learn best when enjoying themselves. Yoga exercises can be incorporated into nearly any class subject and/or be taught through  a variety of games.

Studies have shown people remember better when they are using their entire bodies as opposed to merely watching and listening.

This course is designed for teachers of children ages  3-13. The workshop  is comprised of 3 parts which will be presented daily:

1. Basic elements of yoga

    a. asanas (postures)

    b. pranayama (breathing exercises/awareness)

    c. mantras (songs)

    d. very basic anatomy

    e. meditation/relaxation

2. How to incorporate yoga in the classroom

3. Teaching yoga for children as a separate subject.

Ellen Weissbuch (MA Education 1983, Claremont Graduate University, USA/ California State Teaching Credential  1983  to present and Kundalini Teacher certificate 2003) has taught elementary age children in Los Angeles, London  and Barcelona.

Ellen incorporated yoga into her classroom and pioneered an after school program for children with special learning needs in Los Angeles.

She  has also created a yoga program in a local elementary school in Sitges, where she  lives.

In addition to straightforward yoga classes, Ellen also has designed and taught Ingles en Movimiento, a program  in which students (ages 4-8 ) learn English through yoga, song and dance.

English in movement

Students learn and practice their English vocabulary while following directions to participate in  movement games that will aid increased flexibility,  concentration, strength , balance and relaxation.

The games use names and postures of animals to help students gain a deeper connection with their bodies , all the while actively practicing English.

Studies have shown that when we move as we are learning we assimulate information better and retain that information easier.

Learning English can be fun as students also reap the benefits of yoga and dance improving their physical and emotional wellbeing.
